That may be the case in Texas, but December ain't winter in Wisconsin; it's just late fall. Temps still get above freezing in December. The heart of winter is January & February up here.

Winter doesn't start until December 21st. The majority of it is in Jan-Feb-Mar. So you should go with the beginning of the year.

Winter sometimes starts in the fall. Not always. Sometimes November goes to December and the grass is still green. Sometimes.

Winter always lasts until spring though.

If you say winter of whatever, it means the year you said, from January forward.

If December is shitty, it’s a bonus to the following years winter.
