Most iconic moment from each team

Cardinals 2011 game 6 Freese HR was awesome. But 2006 Waino as a rookie striking out Beltran with bases loaded game 7 with 2 out in the NLCS was a game changer for the organization. Beltran had murdered the Birds that decade. And Waino coming on as a closer that year late was huge. Cards hadn’t had a WC since the early 80s. So yeah 2006 for me

He was consistently average, extremely durable and marketable.

{yawn}

Not only that, but his consecutive games streak is a farce as well. He got to sit out half a season during the strike. Iron man my ass.

He was a nice white guy who showed up for work every day and had a good attitude. That’s nice but don’t tell me he was a great baseball player. He just wasn’t very good.

That streak celebration was astonishing. It exposes just how desperate things got for baseball that we pretended like that was relevant in any way.

Something to be said for Perfect Attendance, though. We used to get Gold Stars for that.

Ripken: 95.9 WAR
Gwynn: 69.2 WAR

lol

He had a couple superstar years

Let's go to Stephen A. on this.

I hate the Bream slide.

Not because it cost the Pirates the pennant a handful of days after I was born and sent them into a 20-year spiral but because I went to high school with his son and he damn well made sure he reminded us of it (it's funny because his son is also a Pirates fan).

It took Sid 17.8 seconds to get from third to home.

A base runner with average speed scores standing up. A left fielder with an average arm easily guns Bream down. Possibly the slowest runner in the Majors at the time combined with a noodle armed left fielder made the play what it was

Gotcha.

Was he twice the player of Nomar? On drugs?

Ripken: 95.9 WAR
Nomar: 44.3 WAR

lol

yep, Nomar was very good for 6 years but didn't do anything outside of 97-03.

Ripken had a 112 OPS+. That doesn't sound that impressive until you consider:

A. He was a shortstop. And not only that, but offensive shortstops were very rare when Ripken came up. Most shortstops with a higher career OPS+ started their careers either late into Ripken's career, or afterwards. Ripken's OPS+ ranks 14th among HOF shortstops, but most of those guys had careers under 5,000 plate appearances (which doesn't even make up for half of Ripken's career).
B. He had almost 13,000 plate appearances.
C. And that was with him being pretty meh in the 90's. His OPS+ up until 1991 was 127

Ripken finished in the top 10 in WAR eight times from 1983-1991 and led three times, including two 10+ WAR seasons. He also ranks 4th all-time in defensive WAR.

Now, I will agree that the 1992-2001 version of Ripken is overrated. But I think people have that image of Ripken in their heads instead of the 1982-91 version of Ripken, whether it's because of The Streak or recency bias.

Nomar had a whopping six good years all at all star but not mvp caliber. Ripken had 9 all star caliber years including 3 mvp caliber years and another 7 years where he contributed positively to the team (there's the longevity). Nomar's other seasons were absolutely worthless whether because of injuries or otherwise.
