Better pickup: SEC with OU and Texas or B1G with USC and UCLA

Yeah, that’s a no-brainer. I would say that they all have some type of blue blood lineage but what the fuck has USC and UCLA done lately.

Oklahoma has been pretty good for many a year now & Texas always has the potential

9 conference games limits good OOC matchups, and big time OOC matchups are the games I get most excited for. Hell, I was pumped about UGA’s future OOC schedule, it had all the big names, but two of them are gonna be conference mates now and super conferences and the alliance are probably gonna put the rest in jeopardy
9 conference games CAN limit good OOC matchups. There are several programs that show that they even with 8 conference games they refuse to schedule more than one decent OOC opponent.

Sometime it isn't even about desire, it is about Financial Necessity. The bigger programs need home games and therefore don't want to schedule Big-Time OOC games and lose the free Home games. Most Power 5 programs with large fanbases prefer 7-8 home games a year to sell to their fans.

One of the advantages of shrinking to 4 P5 conferences is that you can play 1 team from each conference OOC.

Going back to OP,

I will say one item is that the UCLA and USC pickup is more risky than OU and Texas.

OU and Texas do neighbor SEC programs and Texas has strong rivals in the SEC already (Arkansas and Texas A&M). OU doesn't have as many connections but their are some geographical scenarios that work. The road trips are not so great.

USC and UCLA are two programs that have struggled to fill their stadiums and draw fan support lately due to lack of success. They will face long road trips, and their is major sports competition with College Football in the LA market (more so than with OU and UT who seem to be the chief dogs in their regions).

If UCLA and USC struggle heavily, similar to Nebraska, in the B1G, the B1G may see some loss in value with this deal and both programs may struggle in the B1G. So there is some risk in the deal not being that great long-term. However, in short term it was an amazing deal and the Fox TV Contract will kill it with this new lineup.

If it is about money, then USC and UCLA have done well with PAC money they have gotten. Add B1G money to the formula and expect improvement.

I’m just talkin market, that’s Miami’s biggest attraction when it comes to expansion. BIg may try to get em as well, they have about 85% of the best markets already. It’s a pretty good argument that the SEC should get Miami just for another good market
Here is a listing of teams available that make sense and their average viewers per game:

19. Clemson — 1.74M
22. Oklahoma State — 1.58M
25. Florida State — 1.27M
35. Miami — 1.038M
36. North Carolina — 1.032M
40. West Virginia — 948K
50. Louisville — 616K
51. Virginia — 611K
54. Kansas — 540K
56. NC State — 525K
62. Virginia Tech — 447K
96. Duke — 64K

These figures also include the numbers when they play bigger teams. None of these other than Clemson were in games that were the most watched unless they were playing one of the big boys.

I am looking at this from an SEC perspective here. If we look at PAC teams you get this:

10. Oregon — 2.57M
29. UCLA — 1.18M
32. Southern Cal — 1.11M
37. Utah — 994K
38. Washington — 985K
46. Stanford — 778K
47. Arizona State — 739K
59. Washington State — 483K
64. Colorado — 366K
67. Arizona — 337K
69. Oregon State — 321K
76. California — 222K

Obviously Texas & OU

USC & UCLA is a pretty good coup for the B1G though. Adding a nice West Coast market presence. Especially if they can add on Oregon too.

College sports are always a tougher sell in big pro sports markets. I don't think it's "risky" you are still getting a bigger presence in a market you haven't really ever had a huge one in regardless to how USC or UCLA do. I think USC is a pretty good bet to be at least decent going forward with Lincoln there. UCLA is always a wildcard.

If they add Oregon and lock in the top 3 west coast CFB markets it's a big win then.

Plus Ohio State, Michigan & Penn State are all top 10 TV audiences on the regular.

Most watched for 2021 was

  1. Ohio State — 5.22M
  2. Michigan — 4.74M
  3. Alabama — 4.64M
  4. Penn State — 3.87M
  5. Georgia — 3.61M
  6. Oklahoma — 3.46M
  7. Auburn — 3.22M
  8. Michigan State — 2.89M
  9. Notre Dame — 2.84M
  10. Oregon — 2.57M

If the diamond is having more high profile games between teams that move the needle then the SEC came out the winner. UCLA vs Michigan doesn't move the needle as much as Oklahoma vs Georgia will IMO.

If the diamond is concentration of population, then the B1G wins.

True.

USC vs Ohio State/Michigan/Penn State will draw a huge audience though.

UCLA is nowhere near as sexy as OU or Texas though nobody is going to argue that.

Adding Notre Dame would be a home run for the B1G, I still have my doubts it happens but if it did it would be huge.

From what I am understanding, the networks are interested in the potential of having more of the 4 million viewer plus games and willing to pay up to get more of those. It used to be cable subscriber numbers.

But you can fill the ocean with what I DON'T know about all of that.

Nobody underachieves like tejas. NOBODY!!!

The Big10 made out better because we didn’t get stuck with Texas. They may not win the conference but they will kill the conference.
The Southwest Conference agrees with you and some of those same poor bastid schools have seen it twice now! Fool me once…..
