If The 2021 Season Had Still Been The Bowl Alliance

Like in-conference rivals 'on the road' compared to out-of-conference games 'at home'?

Michigan got OOC Colorado and Baylor in Ann Arbor.
Nebraska played both conference foes on the road.

Keep reaching and distracting.
Because Colorado is known for their terrifying stadium environment.

But that wouldn't have ever happened, that's what you don't seem to get. The voters never would have allowed, or voted for, back to back games against UGA and Alabama.

You don't know that.

They re-matched Nebraska vs Oklahoma with just one game in between.

The Bowl Alliance said #1 Alabama had to play the next highest ranked team.

#2 Michigan would have been unavailable and hiding in the Rose Bowl.

The AP had Georgia at #3 and that's who #1 Alabama's Sugar Bowl opponent would have been by rule.

Colorado is known to have an altitude advantage in Boulder. They're also a Nebraska rival.
Nebraska was the ONLY team RED Lettered on their locker room schedules.

Here's the 1996 Michigan @ Colorado result.
The other matches have all been played in Ann Arbor.

I guess we can look at common opponents to get some clues....
Transitive properties don’t really tell a story. And all the what ifs that the Nebraska people like to make up don’t tell the story. Michigan and Nebraska were co-champions, and that is the only truth. It does not change after 25 years. A week or two of making your case and whining is permissible … after that you have to move on. Nebraska should look forward … As a Michigan Die Hard, I am more concerned about beating ohio state this year than bragging about our 1997 Championship.

You're an ignorant moron.

The Big 8's Nebraska and Oklahoma played a rematch in the 1979 Orange Bowl.
Yep, I was there. We bought tickets before Nebraska pissed away the Missouri game.

That is an even better example. However, maze&blew's point was that they wouldn't match an SEC vs SEC.

The Orange Bowl did just that with Nebraska vs Oklahoma. Both Big 8.

Yeah it has happened before. Going off Tennessee's bowl history below. We played Florida and LSU in bowl games. There never was a set rule that you could not play a team from your own league in a bowl game. The focus is to not do that because a rematch isn't as exciting. Heck, the EA Sports game does it at times. Not sure if that is great proof but EA had to have done some research and based the formula that sets up that matchup on something.

Houston is the perfect example of the hipocracy of the "only inviting a guest to the party that has to bring an equal payout" with them. (UCLA is another IMO) The Big 12 already had what part of the Texas market they were going to have without Houston. And I doubt there are tons of Cougar High alumni scattered throughout the country that are itching to watch them from parts unknown. Hell, my Miners have large alumni groups in Houston and DFW.

That is a rule that we have made up on this board, notably @WhosYourDawggy. I don't think it is a set rule. Big12 was also in a different situation last year versus leagues like B1G and SEC right now. They were fighting for survival. I think this is why Pac12 really needs to expand, even if it doesn't bring money, to survive. Big12 is probably getting poached right now by Pac12 if they hadn't made this move.

Also known as a 'Let Down' game coming off the huge Oklahoma win.

Husker players spent the entire week with their heads in the clouds.
Partying on Shakey’s pizza and Falstaff beer while hanging with Suzi Rottencrotch’s grandma.

The dilemma is does a conference expand even if it means each school's share is reduced? If the size of the pie isn't increased proportionatly with the addition of schools, the revenue gap per team is even going to be worse than it already is. But, 10% of something is better than 100% of nothing so there's that if survival is the ultimate goal.

But what I'm saying is this absolutely wouldn't have happened in 1997. Cincinnati wouldn't have been ranked in the top 5 in 1997, ND would have jumped Georgia in 1997. The context of the modern rankings has to come with the understanding of the playoff system and the impacts it has on ALL the rankings.
I didn't keep up with college football until 1999. I am not here to argue the whole 1997 deal. But just thinking... With a Note Dame loss to Cincinnati back in 97, would this loss have hurt the Irish more back then? Were these G5 teams even with good records looked at as quality wins or quality losses back then?

In 1997 Cincy would most likely have gotten Baylor or Okie Jr in either the Orange Bowl or Cotton Bowl.

Possibly Ohio St or a re-match with Notre Dame in the Fiesta.

Michigan gets #10 Utah in the Rose Bowl. That is a fact!!!

The 1997 season had the "Bowl Alliance" who's purpose was to match the two highest ranked teams in a National Championship Game.
The Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange Bowls were part of the Alliance. The Rose Bowl was not.

The Big 10 and PAC 10 refused to join the Alliance because they wanted their conference champs to play in the Rose Bowl.

The Top 4 teams in 2021 were
1. Alabama (12-1)
2. Michigan (12-1)
3. Georgia (12-1)
4. Cincinnati (13-0)

Instead of #2 Michigan having to play #3 Georgia they'd have gotten to play #10 (10-3) Utah in the Rose Bowl.

#1 Alabama would have drawn the next highest ranked team in #3 Georgia (we know what happened there), therefore gifting Michigan the National Championship had they simply beaten #10 Utah in the Rose Bowl.

That is why Michigan is the AP Natty fraud in 1997.

It is getting really pathetic how desperate Nebraska fans have become. It is truly sad.

At least maze&blew tried to use mental gymnastics to justify Michigan dodging the best available team in 1997.

WhoPhoneDis went full on distraction derp.

This is the type of response one gets when OP is spot on!!
This is the response you get when you want so bad to go back 25 years when your program was relevant, you continually post about it now.

No one cares. It is as irrelevant today as the Nebraska football program is. Let it go and move on. For crying out loud, the Trophy you were gifted 25 years ago was named THE SEARS TROPHY. SEARS!!!! That is how old and irrelevant it is.

If you want people to "Let It Go" then stop replying. Seems it's you having difficulty letting it go.

Regarding the OP. Nebraska was not even mentioned.

It is too fun to laugh at how embarrassing the Nebraska fan base has become.

Focus your attention on figuring out how to be competitive in the weak division of the B1G. Baby steps. When Iowa and Wisconsin have beaten you like 15 times in a row between the two -- no one is taking you serious.

You just admitted you can't let it go.

LMFAO!!!

Can't let go of laughing at how pathetic the Nebraska fan base has become. Absolutely. Guilty as charged.
