B1G Media Deal

So if ESPN is out of the BiG business.. It's going to take care of the current ACC and do what it can to get the Big12/Pac into their boat, right? Just not sure that they have enough channels.. Guess they are doubling down on ESPN plus

They now have a TON of inventory to fill on ESPN/2 in the Noon window. There are only 7/8 SEC games a week once conference play starts once it gets to 16. At that point you don't have the inventory to fill all those slots and the SECN. They need the B12 for those games. You can throw Cincy, WVU, UCF and schools like Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor at Noon. Plus work in some of the ACC games. Also, I can ESPN getting the P12 tier 2 rights for 10/10:30 ET games. The good thing working in the P12's favor is they have that late window of inventory. It doesn't rate well, but it's not going away.

I get they wouldn't be joining the B1G, I was curious if this agreement you're hearing would replicate what ND has with the ACC? If ND keeps the games with the ACC, has the 3 games with Stanford, USC and Navy, that leaves 4 games. I can see a scenario where ND does like a home and home with 2 B1G schools per year. But then we'd never play an SEC team. Which I think we'd still like to do.

I didn't get a lot of details in the rumor. I did hear NBC is behind some of it as well. I think it was being pushed more by NBC than Notre Dame and B1G.

I didn't hear anything about the ACC so I am assuming the ACC deal will stay in place.

I don't think this deal is very sizable (perhaps 2-3 games a year).

They could keep the ACC 5 game deal.

Keep the Stanford and Navy annual games.

That's 7.

Keep the annual USC game (now Big 10).

That's 8

Leaving 4 open spots for other Big 10 games.

Ka-Ching $$$

Personally, I'd still like to play an SEC team for recruiting purposes. And it would be good games too. And, play a G5 school for a breather, as im sure everyone else will as well.

ESPN is definitely the big loser here. They will likely contract with Big12, American, and perhaps ACC to save face.

ACC could get a better contract through this route.

Yeah. I'd earlier said that NBC would likely use another conference to supplement the ND deal. I don't see the $75 million ND asked for, but I can see north of $50 million.

ND threw the $75 million out there as just a starting point. At $55 - $60 million both ND and NBC will walk away feeling like they got a good deal.
From what I read, it seemed that the only way ND got big money was to have a lead-in game, or be the lead-in game. This appears to be where you have ND on at 3:30pm on NBC as the lead-in game, and then the prime time game on NBC. That's pretty good when you think about the demographics for B1G and ND.

The only thing that is odd is that CBS is taking the 3:30 slot that will directly compete with the ND game. And paying a lot for it.

This doesn't give the ACC any leverage. They are already locked in.

I am kind of frustrated the SEC is all-in on ESPN. I really think SEC should have kept the relationship with CBS going longer. That was a good contract for SEC. I know it is all about $$$$.

In the end, streaming is about to take over anyways.

Or CBSSN and NBCSN

Anything that is not on CBS, NBC, or Fox will likely be on B1G Network I imagine. I don't think they will have much of anything on the other stations (perhaps non-football sports).

Here are this year's B1G games announced thus far. ESPN will still carry the CFP and Bowl games.

I am not sure that ESPN carried any prime B1G games anyway. ESPN has always been SEC focused, and will now go after the B12 I'd think.

I watch college football on FS1 and CBSSN routinely.

However, I don't recall FS2 or NBCSN carrying any CFB games.

That could change without commitment to ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews

@WhosYourDawggy,

The irony of your last post is great because ESPN used to be the B1G's network. They only pivoted to the SEC the last 5-10 years.

I think the main thing we see here is that with CBS and NBC you have networks, not "cable" sports channels carrying the B1G. I suppose there are people who don't have ESPN or Fox Sports, but I can't imagine people who consume a lot of CFB don't have those two channels.

The big thing to me is the amount ... about 1.3 billion. That's a lot of money.

I don't think FS2 has carried football before, but I do know they have carried college basketball. Mostly Big East OOC games.

One final aspect of this is that we can see what this does for multiple channels and money - 1.3 billion. Dang. When they negotiate the CFP with Fox, ESPN, CBS and perhaps NBC that's going to raise some money!
