To be far, Idaho Falls is not Arco, which is where I lived. Arco is about 25 miles or so from the "site" and about 65 miles west of Idaho Falls. Arco's claim to fame was it was the first town lit by atomic power, which was generated from the nuc site. Arco is situated on a high desert/prairie plane surrounded by sagebrush and jackrabbits.
I'm not sure what facility IF has now with the site, but I know there were caravans of buses that took workers out to the site back in the day. When my wife and I dropped out of the mountains and hit the long straight highway that led to the site, at sunset, with scores of buses around us and barbed wire with federal warning signs, I said aloud, "We are now in the Twilight Zone.
Idaho Falls is not a bad town and is on the edge between lots of cool outdoor activities and the nothingness that is central Idaho. The park is relatively close by. The western and norther parts of the state are also quite scenic.
Heavily Mormon area.
