There is more to the story than a sweet family dog one day decided to just kill a kid. Something else happened. Either the dog was trained or neglected before, or something else occurred to cause the dog to attack.

No link, just experience in situations like this. There is always something that triggered the dog. Might have been innocent, like the kid walked up to the dog and grabbed it or hit it or kicked at it. Not saying the kid is at fault, but not like the dog was just bored and decided to kill the kid.

Spot on. There is nothing genetically different about pit vs any other dog. It comes down to temperament, training, and atmosphere. The only difference is when a pit bites it does more damage than a dachshund.
