Mazi Smith making headlines for all the wrong reasons

We're going to be splitting hairs with this. There's a victim there. And sexual assault related crimes these days are usually acted upon quickly and harshly.

We're talking about a traffic stop and an expired CPL. Should Harbaugh have suspended him a game? I don't know. I'm not sure I care or think it matters. If we say he should have been suspended a game does it change the argument any? He's still playing vs. all the important teams.

And in the end, I don't think he actually gets convicted of anything significant for the same reason; because this all seems rather minor, even though the crime is charged as a felony.
It was only an accusation, I don't think any charges ever came of it, no arrest either. Kicked off the team and went to Last Chance U.

Inb4 "THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!" from Michigan fan.
Could be. We'll never really know, right? If you want to say it's home cooking for a "crime" that probably would have netting him a game suspension at most, ok. I guess we'll never know how he would have been missed in the 31-10 blowout of Indiana.

Those SA accusations get you canceled these days...unless you want to be the coach at Auburn.

And it might not have anything to do with it, but the OPTICS are the killer. Sitting him against Nebraska, Rutgers, or Indiana makes no difference on those games but puts everything to rest about favoritism.

At very least it looks bad then the UM grad prosecutor takes his time on this so the player can play freely without any question throughout the regular season.

Sit him against Indiana and the speculation doesn't even come up.

This happened like 5 years ago.
Wasn't that right at the start of the MeToo movement? Isn't that right around the time Louis CK got the boot because he kept exposing himself to women he was inviting to his hotel room?

Maybe. No charges ended up being filed, if I remember correctly, because he said he had bad jock itch and was just scratching when his shorts came down. :pound:

Oh sure, the stories and headlines are bad PR for sure. They certainly could have, and should have, gotten ahead of this. I still don't think, knowing the details, makes me really care that they continued to play him.

Guess we can put to bed the notion of "above reproach" for Jimothy.

Now if only we could use that to get a few 5 stars and not to just not suspend a kid for the Indiana game.

Gotta have charges before that can happen.

Gotta admit that it is a bad look that it took this long and STILL felony charges were filed. If they weren't sure what to charge him with then either something happened to escalate it back to felony or they were just dragging their feet on a football player to get through the season.
They could have at least waited until after the CFP. Some people only think about themselves.

Simple to get 5*'s.
Step 1) Learn the rules
Step 2) exploit, but stay within, the rules
Step 3) Don't be poor

Yeah, that is the only part of this that shoots a hole in the optics issue.

Yea the "THEY WERE WAITING FOR CHARGES!" angle is weak when there's countless examples of teams taking action on players before charges or made or with no charges being made.
This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. People are innocent until proven guilty. I thank the Ann Arbor police or whoever is handling this for taking such swift action in this case.

So here you go:

smith was in the process of attaining his concealed license when he was pulled over, and he has since received it, according to his attorney

The court also said he's allowed to travel with the team out of state.

This is dumb.

So my take is he knew the law, broke the law, coach and school knew, wasn't punished in any way, and now are trying to play the "at least he didn't hurt anyone" game.

Sure. Ok.
He's in the process for a CPL, thought he could sneak it early, got caught and this is dumb. There's no way he actually gets convicted of a serious crime here.

Michigan fans are trying to say its an expired CCW even though i'm reading you can't get a CCW in Michigan until you're 21? and he's only been 21 for like 5 months.
