Stetson Fucking Bennett is heading to NYC ...

I mean, he's in his 6th year of college. That means 19, so maybe his parents redshirted him at some point before high school ... maybe due to him being a midget per sources here.
He turned 20 midway through the 2017 season, his true freshman season. Hayden Hurst played minor league baseball and was still just 24 after three seasons of college ball

if he had graduated high school on time his true freshman year would have been in 2016. tbh, its not that weird for a mid level athlete to take an extra year of high school

looks like Bennett's college path was:

2017: redshirted at UGA
2018: transferred to a JUCO; played 12 games
2019: backed up Fromm
2020: starter @ UGA
2021: starter @ UGA
2022: starter @ UGA

looks like he got that dumb as shit covid sixth year

so its a combination of him taking an extra year of high school + the extra covid year

Might not have been high school. Might have had to repeat kindergarten or something

Undersized - "midget" - player from an athletically inclined family ... not surprising they might have held him back for a year. It happens around here a lot.

Going to clarify ... it's part of his story:

2020: QB4 to start the season. UGA brought in Jamie Newman to be QB1 from Wake, who then bailed. Brought in JT Daniels as QB2, who was injured and couldn't start. QB3 was Dwan Mathis who lasted less than a half. SBIV came in and saved the game against @Arkansas. JTD was QB1 when he got healthy. Stetson started when JTD was hurt. JTD came back and was QB1 in the game against Cincy in the Peach Bowl. This was a fucked up COVID year, but I think this is right.

2021: QB3 to start the season. QB1 - JTD. QB2 was Beck but he pissed off CKS when his QB coach announced he was starting when JTD was hurt. SBIV started when hurt and never relinquished the job.

2022: starter @ UGA.

Hooker wins if he doesn't get hurt. Probably should have been in NYC. But, there is a history of (1) injured players being eliminated (think the Oregon QB a decade ago), and (2) late season heroics winning the trophy - Bryce last year. It helped that all the other guys shit the bed in their last games, while Stetson excelled. Hooker's last game was a blowout loss, even if not his fault. And the UGA game was just 2 weeks earlier. So much is perception as the season ended.

You know I hate UGA but Stetson would have my vote right now. I care what players do in meaningful games and not when they rack up stats against weaker competition.

Agree with your post by the way.

Frankly, I told Tennessee fans if they want REAL chance, they need to bombard the Heisman sponsor who happens to be headquartered in Tennessee and employs a lot of Tennessee graduates. Email bomb Nissan and have them apply the pressure in the committee.

Been a standard practice for years here in Texas but when you held them back was critical. (I think this is still a rule but I've been out of that for a while.)
The kid had to be held back prior to the 8th grade. Once they entered the 8th grade, their 5 year eligibility clock started ticking. Even then they couldn't be 19 before Sept 1 in order to participate.

One of my grandson's is a August 25 baby. I wish my daughter had waited a year for him to start school just for physical maturity purposes. But he was academically ready.

When I was a kid, they wanted to do that to me and my parents pulled me out of public and moved me to private (it wasn't the only way). I had no problem testing into my grade at private and did very well for myself (it is kind of hilarious to consider where I am now).

My friend got held back a year although he liked it for sports reasons.
