The first case of #TexasHeatBro your volunteers lost the one battle they were in.. They definitely weren't SEC ready back then
I am surprised people are not discussing the rumors on here but On3 is claiming SEC is back to East/West model for time being (hint is it may not be permanent). There is also rumors of keeping 4/8 and having only 1 permanent opponent but removing divisions. A lot of rumors flying at the moment.
The thought behind why they are sticking with 4/8 for time being has to do with a contract negotiation with ESPN to get more $$$ for 9/3. This is why a lot of the noise about the 4/8 model is that it will only be for 2024.
I am wondering what they think they will accomplish. They can go the 7/1 route and stay at the same number of games, but get better games and make sure you get no. 1 v. no. 2 in the SECCG. I'd be surprised is this is anything other than a negotiating tactic.
It surprised me that they can't get a deal. It's not like the SEC is the ACC with nothing more to offer. By going to 9 IC games, with a 3-6-6 format, the inventory of incredible games is 4X what it is with divisions. Everyone should be able to run the math and see that ESPN will make a butt load more money, and then come up with a fair way to compensate the SEC. If they won't then no reason to go to 9 games, but I would prefer the 1-7-7 over the new divisions. That is the claim. SEC is not happy with the amount for a 9-game schedule based on the rumors and there is concern it won't be resolved prior to 2024 so there might be an odd setup for 2024. This may explain why most SEC teams still have 4 non-conference games scheduled.
Dude, you have to post links so we can see where you are getting this stuff. I've seen nothing on the concerns about payment for a 9 game schedule. In fact what I have seen is the league pushing for 9 games and using the additional money as an incentive to get teams to sign up.That is the claim. It's no secret there are two teams Auburn and Alabama who have voted for a 9 game schedule for years and everyone else voted no because they didn't want to play an extra conference game.
Tennessee, Georgia and Florida didn't want to have to play teams like Bama, LSU and Auburn more often (if they weren't doing so anyway) and KY, USC, Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss State, Missouri, Arkansas didn't want to hurt their chances at a bowl game. No idea why LSU wasn't in favor.
With the addition of OU and Texas an additional game only makes sense or it will be a decade before some teams play. ESPN would be crazy to not want that extra game and pay for it.

it's posturing now.. they want more with the 9th game.. I think ESPN feels it's paying enough, it will get resolved soon..if not.. I guess UT can now schedule ACU??I don't see how the payout projections get there without the SEC going to 9 games in-conference.

Those contracts are fluid. Hence being "projections".
A 9 game SEC schedule can get them to those projections, but I don't see an 8 game schedule doing it.
SEC teams will schedule FCS or low level G5 cupcakes in that extra game that nobody will watch.
Example.... Georgia 2023 OOC Schedule
UT Martin
Ball St
UAB
GA Tech
Pretty much any SEC team in there (other than Vandy) would (at minimum) double the viewership of any of those games.
Or if Ball State pulls a 2022 Kent State situation where they give Georgia a scare...
Overall agree though. There is an 8-game vs 9-game camp but from what I understand, the 9-game camp has more power and won the argument (most of the power programs favor the 9-game, it is the UK, Miss State's, etc. that want the 8-game schedule).
Interestingly, I have no clue where Tennessee and Vanderbilt stand on the 9-game schedule. I can tell you most of the rest of the SEC. The vibe I get from both is they really don't care. I think Vandy doesn't care about anything as long as the checks keep rolling in.
Tennessee wants to keep rivalry games with Alabama and Vandy so I think they are more in favor of 9-game schedule.
ESPN can't make a reasonable argument they are paying enough. If you look at the inventory of and 8 game division schedule and a 9 game 3-6-6 schedule, the inventory is 3 to 4 times better. The SEC has media experts that are laying out how much more ESPN is going to make. Now, ESPN can play hardball and say a deal is a deal, but the SEC has moves. I am guessing there is a "material change" provision in the contract that could rely on. Threaten to open the rights back up for ESPN violating that provision. But, at the end of the day ESPN will pay more because they are going to make way more.it's posturing now.. they want more with the 9th game.. They haven't ... Saban just doesn't like his 3. He's trying to get LSU off and MSU on. Candidly, the MSU game is a good one .. they are just a little over an hour apart.![]()
Support for 9-game model dwindles as SEC gathers for spring meetings
At least five SEC schools enter spring meetings opposing a switch from eight conference games to nine when Oklahoma and Texas join the league in 2024, sources tell 247Sports.247sports.com
Wow, if true Alabama has switched camp to 8 game schedule. UK was always in that camp and the leader of it in the past
