But he wouldn’t have been awarded that fake title in 97 had he not retired. So he’d already be in the hole if he didn’t.

Nebby was the best team in ‘97, maize. That’s their title. We’ve been through this a million god damn times.
UM had the weaker resume/body of work and was statistically worse in almost every single category.

The best teams if you ignore all the metrics. Sure. worse against common opponents. Required a fluke play to stay undefeated. Wasn’t in the number one spot until he announced retirement. And saban was about to call it quits when Nebraska took him behind the woodshed. Dr Tom put his arm around a young Nick saban and told him he would be great.
Btw. Saban STILL has never beaten Nebraska
If they had playoffs the question would have been answered, but they didn’t have playoffs back then. There is a certain group of people that think the louder you yell and the more you cry the better your team was. That group of people, is the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In fairness to Nebraska, their future is looking pretty bleak … they have to grasp onto the past.

Nebby had two games decided by a td or less. UM had four.
Gonna have to do better than that.

Nebby had already been the higher ranked team for the first 2/3 of the season anyway.
Several pollsters only watched UM’s narrow escape vs WSU and didn’t even bother watching the Nebby-Tenny game.
Just handed the #1 spot to UM, gift-wrapped and all.
Nebby got a legitimate nat’l title. UM got one hell of an xmas gift.

Not sure they really needed the playoffs. They really just needed #1 vs #2.
But, no, the B1G just wasn’t having any of that. No, sir.
They just had to have their special little “Rose Bowl” against a lesser team.
When they did move to the BCS, the B1G had to be dragged the whole way, kicking, screaming, and flailing.
And here we are.
This ranking was last century … the coaches gave one of their own a #1 ranking as a retirement gift. It’s not that big of a deal. Nice career Tom Osborne.
Also, if Michigan didn’t go to the Rose Bowl, they probably would have been sued and face possible sanctions by the NCAA. They were contractually obligated.
@Knight&Day and @MAIZEandBLUE09, this is why his fellow coaches gifted him. It was a nice thing to do.

It wasn't a one season issue.
Bowl Coalition: 1992 - 1994 (Match the top 2 teams in a National Championship game)
Bowl Alliance: 1995 - 1997 (Match the top 2 teams in a National Championship game)
They began work on the Bowl Coalition agreement in 1990 after a split National Championship between Colorado (AP) and GA Tech (Coaches).
The Big 10 had 8 years to jump onboard one of those.
In refusing to play the best for a natty, they got exactly what they wanted with their Rose bowl match-up against #8 Washington St. as opposed to having to play the best available (Nebraska).
1997 Michigan is basically 1984 BYU.
Was Michigan contractually obligated to play in the Rose Bowl? Excuse me for not living in the last century and complaining about a ranking. If I were voting, I may have given Tom Osborne a retirement gift too.

The Big 10 did NOT want to have to play the best available in event of a possible national championship team. Odds were a lot better to get a lesser opponent in the Rose Bowl.
So, Michigan was not contractually obligated to play in the Rose Bowl? You know this how?
