TV series you almost gave up on, but glad you didn't

Parks and Rec definitely took a while to find its footing. The cast upgrades after the first season were huge. In the first season they seemed like they wanted Lindsey Knope to be an enthusiastic version of Michael Scott. It's Always Sunny was the same way though the first season was a lot better. I didn't start watching either until they were well under way though.
Season 1 of Parks and Rec was the worst season of the show, but at the same time, it was still better than any season of The Office. And Always Sunny was great from the get go IMO

I gave the Office numerous chances. It’s just not a good show and I will never get what people see in it.
it has that goat TV show character of all time, Creed

it also has the woat tv show character of all time, Pam.

Not many shows have that range.

Ron Swanson>>>

The Office version of Ron was a Star Wars nerd beat farmer. Only Beat Farmers I like were a cow punk band out of San Diego

Highlighting these posts to make a general point; why would you ever bail on a show after the first episode, especially a prestige drama type of show? I could see maybe a generic sitcom because you pick up the vibe, etc. But pretty much all shows need time to build. You're not gonna get that in 1 episode. You should do 3 to 4 episodes at minimum. Some shows are really good and can hook you with the pilot, but you should never bail just because the pilot was lackluster.

Watch Invincible and you'll understand.

It prolly is the best show I’ve ever watched.

But completely get what you’re saying on the first episode. Snot Boogie… dumbest name in the whole series.

Homicide:facepalm:ife on the Street was one of my favorites in the 90’s. And a friend couldn’t believe I wasn’t into The Wire. Took a little effort to give it time.

Not sure anything has brought more interesting, believable characters into one series.

Michael B. Jordan is still Wallace, whenever I see him.

When the actor who played D'Angelo showed up on an episode of "Friday Night Lights" with him I yelled out "He knows where the fuck Wallace is now!"

A lot of the kids give such solid performances. Tristan Wilds (Michael) is so, so good. Michael says so little but he tells us so much.

Game of Thrones. When it came out watched the first episode and wasn't really into it but a few weeks later decided to watch a few more and was hooked.
And you didn't almost give up after Season 4?

It took me quite a few episodes of Better Call Saul to really enjoy it. It's a really slow build.

I was never considering giving up on it but it did start a bit slow. Came close to being as good as its predecessor amazingly enough.

I never "gave up" but I went a month between episodes, it was real low on the list.

Season 4 was great.

To me it was only the final 2 seasons where the show started to go off the rails but even then there were some great episodes in both of those final two seasons. The pacing was just increased way too much and seasons cut shorter for no reason. The final season also had the two worst episodes in the entire series including the finale. Which is wild because the first half of the finale was actually pretty good but then it just fell of a cliff into unbelievably bad in the last half of the episode.

I thought season 7 had some major issues (mostly involving the trip beyond the wall) but still had some major strengths. Season 8 went way off the rails.

The Wire.
I kept hearing about how great it was, but when I finally got around to watching it, I couldn't finish the first episode.
It took me a couple of tries. The only reason I finally finished the first episode (after which I still wasn't hooked, but was willing to try another episode, or two) was becasue I think Dominic West is cute.
I ended up loving the series.
For me Breaking Bad was kind of the same, I watched the first few episodes and was like "meh", then around episode 5 or 6 (when we first meet Tuco) it started getting good, ended up being one of my favorites of all time.

As has been mentioned, Better Call Saul was a slow build, but ended up worth it.

Season 8 still had some great episodes. The second episode, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, was among the best in the entire series. The Bells was also excellent.

The first episode and The Long Night weren't bad either. There was too much plot armor on some characters in The Long Night and not getting any sort of fight between Jon and the Night King or whatever his name was, was a major disappointment but overall it was an entertaining episode. I do get and agree with a lot of the criticism of that episode though.

The 4th episode though was just absolutely horrific though. Might be the worst episode in the series if not for the finale. Just bad, bad, bad from start ro finish and then a dragon dies out of nowhere in a way that makes no logical sense form character decision making perspective nor does the end of that episode make any sense as to why Cersi doesn't kill the other dragons when they have this stupid standoff at the end of the episode to kill the one chick.

And of course the finale as I previously went over was just awful. Last half of that episode probably the worst thing ever out on TV for how it ruined everything before it. First half of that episode though, not too bad.

Not sure I’ve ever seen a full episode of Always Sunny.
