It isn't a "red herring" -- it is a fact. But keep insinuating if they had the 12th regular season game -- it'd have been a loss in every year.
Now let's go the opposite of that -- they could have won 8 games in 99'. They could have had a winning record in 95' and 96' -- they could have won 10 games in 93'. They could have been .500 in 98'.
Now your 5 losing seasons is really only 2 losing seasons and your comparison makes no sense.
