Brian Hartline -- I'm torn here.

In a roundabout way, Fat Bert.
I look at that differently. He left the conference and was hired back. But a coach currently a HC in conference and leaving for another conference job? I could be wrong, but I don't think that has happened in the modern era

Then he isn't smart enough to be an HC.
I would have loved to have had him, but he was only going to stay for a few years until a better job (ex. OSU) opened up. Fickell walked away from both Mich St and WVU offers because he was waiting for a situation that checked all the boxes.

What do you consider the modern era?

I believe that is why he backed out of the Cincy job

Good question. And FWIW I would say no. It appeared they had buyer's remorse after his first season

I feel like MSU fans are going to hate the hire they are going to make, because I get the feeling that after the Mel Tucker fiasco it's going to be more of a bargain bin MAC type guy than a high level coordinator higher away from a major program.

Hartline is too good for MSU. They’ve earned a few years of coaching purgatory before any big names start looking their way.

It will be some guy Dantonio golf’s with and he will stay on as “Special advisor” or something.

Another thing to keep in mind is if they are wanting to hire someone while the season is going on, of course the pickings will be slim. I get the feeling they are preparing to have Harlan Barnett serve the remainder of the year and when hiring season starts up they make a play. Of course Barnett would very well be the guy.

Doubtful that happens. I cannot think of any coach that switched jobs in conference

Sark left UW for the USC job

O'Brien left BC for the NC State job

Mullen left Mississippi State for the Florida job
