Michigan reportedly is gearing up to hand Jim Harbaugh a massive contract extension. Harbaugh has won two straight Big Ten championships and has brought the Wolverines to two straight College Football Playoff appearances. Currently, the Wolverines are 6-0 and ranked second in America. The school is getting ready to lock up Harbaugh with lots of cash. John Bacon reported Monday that “two high-ranking UM officials” told him the plan is to make Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten “within the next month.”

Good idea or not?

They were going to fire him at one point, made him take a reduced salary at another, team is under investigation and he likes to sleep at recruits' houses. We've seen these kinds of deals blow up in the face of ADs more time then they have worked out and honestly he is in his 8th year and its rare these days for a coach to be productive past 10. There are exceptions but a decade at the helm seems to be a tipping point and that period actually may get shorter with NIL and the portal.

All that being said the guy has turned around Michigan (it took him 6 years) and he has at least caught tOSU and there is a strong argument replaced them as the top dog in the B1G.

Good idea or not?

They were irrelevant for a decade before he got there. He's in position to have them go back to back to back B1G champs for the first time since the early 90's.

Yes, it's a good idea.

He turned them around after some bad coaching hires. He has a team this year that can win the Natty. They need to add in a big penalty if he leaves for the NFL. He should be the highest paid in the B1G and top 5 in the country.

Good idea or not, it is necessary. We have seen lesser coaches receive 90-100 mil contracts. If he chooses to court the NFL again and leaves so be it, the school can protect themselves with a nice buyout clause

I'd give him a bump but not an extension over 5 years and I would include a massive buyout if he left. Doubt he would sign that though. I don't think the NFL threat is that real as the NFL is really going the young assistant/coordinator route and I don't think Harbough fits their model anymore.

On the other side, I don't think Harbough would be that hard to replace as I don't think Ryan Day would either. One call to Luke Fickell probably fills either position. I think replacing a Saban or Kirby is so much harder.

I think a lot of coaches are grossly overpaid right now especially:

Brian Kelly
Jimbo Fisher
Dabo Sweeney - I get he won those national championships but I don't think he is going to repeat that success anytime soon as NIL and the portal have changed the landscape and his major coordinators were stolen.

The one guy that is underpaid is Nick Saban and the main reason for that is Bama as a school has grown from around 28K to 39K and still growing and a lot of that is branding from the national championships. Bama is in a unique position where they are aggressively growing their university and not many are trying to do that. For example, Clemson is about 28K students and they don't have a massive desire to grow that tremendously as they are branding towards higher academic standards and rankings rather than volume. Auburn is doing the same and is stuck at around 32K and doesn't have the infrastructure to do much more. Bama is ranking in tens of millions a year in quality enrollment and increasing that number yearly so that makes Saban the cheapest academic recruiter in the country.

they have too.. this is their golden period :)

I know you’re not asking a Nebraska man about good coaching hires.

I’ll just assume you didn’t want my opinion.

Not afraid to admit when I am wrong. I was a big proponent of Harbs going off to the NFL after a couple of losses to MSU, but he’s redeemed himself and made anxious fans like myself look silly.

Sign him up. Can’t have him coaching the Bears vs the Lions.

This is why I don't think this will work out. He won't agree to that.

But dude if you could pawn him off to the NFL it would open the job up for Deion.

That would be awesome.

Deion vs the Michigan University system.

Yeah, let him have it

As long as Deion doesn’t come to any other B1G school, especially MSU or Ohio State, I’m cool.

Just the half that are fuggin' retarded.
yeah year 2 he immediately improves based off his last two gigs.. might be tougher on paper due to the scheduling and new members

half the fan base is ready to fire rhule..

just maybe

Every fan base will be begging for him or Urban once their HC is fired.

Sparty has already been doing it for weeks. 🙄

Yeah pay him. Either he keeps winning and triggering tOSU fans or he hamstrings the school. Either way, :beer2:

That would be epic. Michigan's archaic ass against Deion's hood program with his theme music. The problem is.............half the kids Deion would want to bring in, wouldn't get past admissions.
