Coaching Carousel

Jonathan Smith or Fisch
Smith is intriguing but I wouldn’t call it an upgrade from Chip.

I’m waiting to see if Smith is a Matt Campbell who was hot as a pistol but couldn’t sustain it.

I could see Mullen going back or at least Miss St offering. no idea what he's doing now.
He is on TV.

Mullen is weirdo and on paper it seems like a good idea but do you really want him.

Miss State should say FU and hire Art Briles. He has been cleared of NCAA wrong doing so it would be a PR problem at first but everyone would get over it.

Removing the compensation factor, which one of those is the best job?
A&M far and away the resources alone make it the best. High expectations, but I think the Jimbo experience humbled them a bit. I doubt the expectations are high enough to give the next coach a national title plaque.

Next is probably Miss St. They probably have lower expectations than the rest of the field and are still in a good recruiting area.

Then it is probably NW or Boise because though their previous coaches gave the fans expectations moving forward, they are not in hotbed recruiting and also aren't top teams to truly believe those expectations will be met any time soon.

Then probably MSU. Decent recruiting, but they are in a tough division, rivals to contend with, high expectations or at least higher than others mentioned. But they are in a conference that has stability. So maybe Boise is the toughest, idk

Chip Kelly's seat is warming up at UCLA. I wouldn't be surprised if he joins this list
Nah, he’s fine. Transition year, he’s there til he wants to hang it up… which will probably be when those midwestern winds in November/December cut him in two.

The thing with Texas A&M. They won the BIG XII in 1998. A quarter century ago. They have never won their division in the SEC. The SEC is very difficult to win. It is about to get more competitive. They have a lot going for them. Stadium size, money, facilities, etc. Sure, they can have their 9 and 10 win seasons, possibly make the 12-team playoff. From what I have read and watched, A&M wants championships. That is going to take a next level coach. In this day and time, coaches just don't go from G5 to the SEC and win on a consistent basis. Look at Sun Belt Billy, now at Florida. It is going to take a coach like Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, etc.

As I was saying...

going forward, conference championships will be viewed as a nice thing to have but its all about the 12-team playoff. wgaf if you won the conference? still made the playoffs.

the SEC is going to be nearly impossible to win going forward. Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU. Not to mention schools like Florida, Auburn and Tennessee. funny thing is 1998 was the last time Tennessee won a conference championship, too. no wonder @Volbound1700 had enough of this site.

It would be interesting to see the last conference championships (not division championships) for all the P5 teams. If I wasn't so lazy and technomologically challenged, I would look it up. I'm talking schools like Illinois, Mizzou, Texas Tech, NC State, Az State, etc.

NC State's was 1979. on paper, NC State should be a good program but its just a bad athletic department, tbh. also think its weird how long Doeren has been there considering his predecessors delivered similar results and were shown the door.

Hell, I'll try to look those five up...but only the last 50 years. Should be a good sample.

Illinois -3
Big 10 1983, 1990*, 2001

Mizzou - 0

Texas Tech - 2
Southwest Conference 1976*, 1994*

NC State - 2
Atlantic Coast 1973, 1979

Az State - 6
WAC 1973*, 1975, 1977*
PAC 10 - 1986, 1996, 2007*

*Co-champions

Sooooooo, 13 out of 250 opportunities

Arizona State is the one I think should have been better than they have been.

I love Smith. He was solid as OC for UW and he has fully transformed a second tier (3rd?) P5 team into a top 25 program.

He will get offers given that the beavs aren't going to be able to pay him if they end up dropping to G5 money.

It's his Alma Mater though so maybe he stays?

since Texas A&M joined 3 from each division have won the divisions. Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and LSU, Alabama, Auburn

Divisions aren't championships. The one name missing from that list is A&M. And starting next season, divisions are done.
