Several more qualified candidates TBH. It's Michigan, they would come regardless.

The new NIL era could cover up a lot of potential lack of experience warts, it certainly has with Day at tOSU but like I say, we'll see how it shakes out, I'd just rather have the coach who has been a HC already and has that experience, particularly with everything Michigan is losing as far as talent. :noidea:

Who was the last head coach to have success at a school, poached by another school and continue that success? I can think of far more successfully promoted coordinators or failed "great hires" than I can coaches who have had success bouncing from one school to the next. Fickle is forgettable at Wisconsin. Rhule has sucked at Nebraska so far. Probably mike norvel is the one that jumps off the page. USC got the coach and QB, and still kinda sucked. I guess kelly at LSU has been OK. But I feel like the move when there isn't a clear cut choice is to go after an up and coming coordinator, and we already had one on staff.

Fickell and Rhule have had one year so you can't make any conclusions yet, especially with the mess Rhule had to clean up from Frost.

I think of obviously Saban and Urban (MSU to LSU/LSU to Bama and Utah to Florida/Florida to OSU). Then there's Dantonio (Cincy to MSU), Tressel (YSU to OSU), Chris Petersen (BSU to Washington), you already mentioned Norvell and Riley, and Kelly also did it between Cincinnati and ND. There are plenty of others but those are off the top of my head.

There's some out there. And often times it's a HUGE name. But even that isn't fool proof (see A&M and Jimbo). But I think you could come up with a list of big names of has-beens who were once thought of as the next great coach only to prove otherwise somewhere. Tom Herman, or Matt Campbell come to mind.

To be fair, it didn't take much to see the Jimbo situation happening. That was a desperation hire when they needed to make a splash, but he was on a 4-year slide after his FSU title. Tom Herman was a coordinator before Houston, and he was only there for 2 years, so he wasn't an established name, and Campbell has been incredible. If anything, he needs to make the jump to some place where he can actually have some resources, but he has some odd loyalty to ISU. Still, he's had a winning record there 6 out of 8 years, and was 35-15 at Toledo.

I honestly know nothing about the guy in terms of his offensive scheme preference or anything but I'd assume it'll still be more run-focused.
 
Lots of promotions. No idea how it plays out on the field. Was OC for us against one scrub team this year and we had our best passing game of the year. Doubt it means anything
