I have one ruby throat and maybe a couple of girls, but I can't for sure tell yet. I'm trying to take photos of their underbellies, but the little fuckers flit away right when I get a decent shot. For now, I've shoved the ring in a bunch of flowers underneath the feeder, but nobody has paid it any mind yet. One did start sucking on the new fuchsia I just put up so that was cute :cloud9:

I don't know what the hell is going on, but I had a hummingbird build a nest and raise its babies in my magnolia tree. The thing is, the nest was only about 6 ft off the ground, so the perfect height for observing. Then, last week, I had one start dancing in the water I was spraying from a hose. It felt like I was hallucinating, I just couldn't believe it was happening.

That's so friggin' awesome. I can just watch them all day. The ruby throated one here is a such a butthole. Talk about territorial! Though, he did seem to be on a date with one of the girls the other evening. It was very sweet 💞

In less pleasant news... I really wish inanimate objects had feels. I feel a profound sense of injustice when shit happens and someone doesn't pay the price for making me mad. :mad2:

They're wild when they start chasing each other!!!
I have a picture of the mama in her nest, but didn't wanna freak her (or the babies) out tryin' to get pictures of them.
I was so worried about nest after I first found it, because we had some strong winds, then I noticed instead of the nest resting on the limbs, it was actually kind of woven around the limbs. And sooooooooo teensy!

:spit:
Perfect!

When my son was about 5 or 6 we were on vacation in Murrieta, in the avocado groves. We were in this barn that had been converted into a game room, and kept hearing this weird buzzing sound. It turned out to be a baby ruby-throat, and it was stuck in the rafters. I tossed a couple of ping pong balls, second or third one dislodged it and it fluttered to the floor. My son picked it up and held it for a few minutes until it felt recovered enough to fly away. Closest I've ever been to one.
My pops' old house had a a room that used to have a small walled deck area off of an upstairs room, that they renovated and expanded the room out onto that deck area eliminating it from use, but the walled part stayed and technically there was still like a foot of deck. They put a window in and it rendered it useless, but the never ripped down the deck walls. (It was small, like a hotel deck)

Sitting up there one day after the reno, and something smashes into the window and down into the "well" that was what was left of the deck. I opened the window and hung out it to retrieve a hummingbird. It's poor little beak was bent 90 degrees downward at the tip. It came back to consciousness in my hands. It flapped the fuck out of shit in my hands for a few seconds and then bolted to it's inevitable slow death.

It ripping shit in my hands was something I can truly say was a unique feeling.

So cool, my son never has forgotten that feeling. I thought about whether or not that little thing survived, especially after I hit it with a ping pong ball, but it looked okay, no damage to wings. It sat there breathing heavily for a few seconds, tongue flashing in and out rapidly, then it started to flap until it got airborne and took off.

I tried to hold onto it, cuz I knew it was gonna die a slow shitty death, but once it started flapping, you couldn't have held on to that shit for nothing. I'll never forget it either. Crazy sensation.

I've held a stunned hummingbird in my hands before.

Thankfully he recovered and was able to fly off okay.

Had a dove fly into a second floor window over the weekend at about mach 5, instantly shitting itself and leaving a perfect imprint of impact on the window. It was stunned and stumbled around like @beardown07 at. Melvins concert. Got its dumb ass up in the air again after a couple minutes. Not as cool as your stories, but oh well.
