Week 1 - Evaluate your team after their first game

Just got a chance to sit and watch the game.

Potential. A lot of potential here.

I remember in the not too distant past, OU players when celebrating would have this chant: WE TOO DEEP, OU. They were talking out their ass. In fact I would state that the exact OPPOSITE were true.

BV is starting to get OU to that place. We're now experiencing an emphasis on trench, defense, and depth.

Offensively I think OU did exactly what they set out to do, just not as polished and resultant...lot of questions still on the OL, WR positions. JA took care of the ball, WRs had the dropsies. The two-TE sets are proving my belief that Littrell/Finley have reconfigured for more emphasis on the ground and toward JA's skill set. Bedenbaugh will prove why he does what he does where he's at. Even when depleted his OL's are servicable.

Defensively I won't say much. We're thicker in the middle. Nice change of pace. Defense is a waterfall...more rocks at the beginning mean weaker stream downstream...rocks in the middle benefit, diffusing the water further...backside ready to finish the job. Seen decent penetration, great pursuit, sound gap assignment, better transfer coverage in zone, so many helmets hawking the ball...on our way back to that place.

We have a kicker.

9 win season a better possibility.

About what I expected. We seem to always come out sluggish in these games against teams like Akron where people are thinking we should score 100 points or whatever.

The OL needs to get better but everything else is fine for week 1.

Week 1 is a terrible way to evaluate your team. Were you prepared? Was the team playing against you prepared? So many variables. I am not a fan of pre-season ranking, but I feel they are more accurate.

My amateur opinion is: ohio state is solid (as usual), Michigan is ok. If we end up 8-4, I am good with that.

Defense scored twice bringing them up from A to A+. Dealt with a number of trick plays and kept the Zips out of the end zone.

Offense: O line still needs work. Offense needs to play clean. Jeremiah Smith is 'HIM', whatever that means.

Special Teams - made all the kicks.

Coaching - needed to get the backup qb time with the 1's. Too much shuttling of the right guard in the first half so neither guy could get in to the rhythm of the game. Should have let the backup punter kick the last one. He was projected as the starter at the beginning of the week but was inconsistent in practice. Need to see what he can do under fire.

Add to Special Teams: they were blocking well on punt returns and Inniss looked good for the role. I would love to see Downs take a couple returns though

We are really fucking good everywhere. People in the media vastly underrated us because of no Saban.

Cornerback is the only question on this team and that’s because of inexperience. We got Multiple 5* freshman in the secondary that just need playing time. Also worried about OL if Proctor is out for a longtime.

RB and Recievers are massive improvements from last year. Saban literally played the 2 worst RBs on the team because they were Seniors

Unfortunately, you are stale air. I never mentioned anything about allegations against Michigan. This thread is about Week 1 evaluations. There are many good ohio state posters on here … you are not one of them.

Alabama looked really good against a respectable Western Kentucky. This is never a surprise, but it shows a smooth transition from Saban. Georgia took on an excellent Clemson. Much respect to both Alabama and Georgia.

They had a couple of returns called back which kind of ruined it, but Innis had 60 yards in punt returns yesterday - they had 75 yards all last year.
 
A bit better than expected offensively, given Nebraska started a true freshman QB. I lost a dollar to my buddy since I took UTEP at +28. I took his dollar last week taking GT +10 against FSU.

UTEP's defense was pretty bad last year though being 75th in Total Defense and 85th in Scoring Defense.

Nebraska was 11 for 17 on 3rd down and had sustained TD drives of...

12 plays, 72 yards, (5:54)
8 plays, 63 yards, (3:45)
9 plays, 59 yards, (2:03)
11 plays, 73 yards, (5:04)

Then 17 plays, 87 yards, (9:26) for a FG.

Raiola needs to stay healthy because the backup QB (Haarberg) is the same guy that started last year, and wasn't any more impressive than last year. Nebraska was near the bottom in Total Offense last year.
 
Offense explosive, defense sucks.

Don't start that in here. It will take over every thread if we don't keep it in the Michigan cheating one
 
Iowa State came out throwing the ball and scored in two plays on their first possesion. That made my day. Rocco and the receivers are really good. The defense struggled with the mobile QB when his passing plays were covered and he took off. However, ISU had enough defensive speed to keep the runs in front of them instead of giving up TDs. North Dakota did have a grind it out 10 minute drive (with multiple 4th down conversions) or so that ended in a FG. Overall, I was happy though. A three score win + not looking so vanilla in the first game was nice for a change. 1-0 and on to next week!
 
I thought Miller Moss played very well. Not exactly "Caleb who?". But the offense appears to be in very good hands with him at QB.

For the most part, I thought the offense played well enough. I trust that they will improve as the season progresses.

I thought the o-line was pretty suspect. There were too many times when LSU defenders were able to get hits on him either as he released the ball or just after he released it. They also struggled to open holes for the RB's. That will have to improve if they want to compete for the B1G crown and make the playoff.

The defense looked to be much improved. It was a bit of "bend, but don't break" as they gave up over 400 yards of offense, but they got stops (including some 3 and outs) when they needed them. It definitely beat the hell out of the past few years of bend and break defense.
