tOfficial 24-25 NHL season thread

We're halfway through the season and every team in the Eastern conference is still realistically in the playoff hunt. 7 points separates the wildcard from worst in the conference. It's pretty wild.

Personally, I hope Columbus gets in (as long as it's not at the expense of the Red Wings getting in). That would be a good story and they deserve a good thing to happen to them after this continuous string of catastrophes the organization has endured.
They have 17 mil to spend.

It’s scummy as fuck that the NHL still counts Johnny 2 mil against the cap.

I get the feeling that will be one thing discussed in depth in the next CBA negotiations. As will the repeated exploitation of LTIR rules to circumvent the cap rules for the benefit of the playoffs *cough*MarkStone*cough*.

Fuck Rempe, biggest loser in the league. 15 foot reach and he gets pummeled in every fight so he cheap shots guys instead.

Pretty much means Charlie Lindren's gone after the season. Well, hopefully Clay Stevenson or whoever else in the system is good enough. I'm not sure what the cap space will look like for any FA backup goalies.

Lindgren stinks. Never liked him going back to Sioux Falls.

The Mangiapane contract is thankfully gone next year and Leonard should be able to step in on the cheap. There’s definitely room to keep Chyc and get a UFA goalie.

5.85x6

Fucking steal.
Thompson has been great this year, but that term is a little scary. Getting 6 more years like this out of him is unlikely.

Braden Holtby was a year younger than Thompson is now when he got a 5-year contract from the Caps. The 5th year of Holtby's contract wasn't good. There's a good chance the backside of this contract gets ugly.

They got a cup on that contract, I think anyone would take that…

Huge difference in style between Holtby and Thompson, not to mention wear and tear. Bigger positional goalies have a longer shelf life than hybrid goalies.

If they can get 4 solid years out of 5 at less than 6 mil, it’s an even bigger steal.

Cap projected to go to 95.5 mil next year.

Backstrom / Oshie dead money is gone too. It’s a good springboard for building / retaining value. I’m not a big fan of locking up $5-6M / yr for a goalie, though I recognize this is a better state with the position than years past.

It can get worse too, I suppose. I recently was in TB and saw them play the Red Wings. It occurred to me that Vasilevskiy‘s contact, has also been a huge challenge to manage around. Asking your GM and farm system to carry the slack isn’t a big ask, and I’m pleased the Caps have done so well the last couple of years. But long term success on the ice while locking up expensive positions is almost impossible.

Vasy earned a payday. Tampas problem is McDonaugh fell off a fucking cliff offensively due to age and wheels. They will still make the playoffs, where Vasy earns his money.

Tampa making the playoffs is far from a slam dunk. They'll be in the mix, but they've got some stiff competition this year and could easily find themselves outside the cut line after 82.

And IMO, exporting Sergachev to Utah had bigger impact than McDonaugh's decline.

Detroit and Ottawa are playing way above expectations, to expect them both to make it in is a reach IMO. Tampa has games at hand on both(and Boston). Tampa also has the 4th best GD in the league, the fact they are mediocre right now is the fluke.

Detroit was tied with Washington for the final playoff spot last year, but found themselves on the outside from a tie break. Detroit's trajectory was up going into this season. Prior to Christmas, the team was playing well below expectation. After the coaching change, things have improved drastically and now after a couple of long winning streaks are back where they were projected to be - in the playoff mix.

Ottawa's trajectory was up, too. I agree they're currently above preseason projection, but not "way above".

We knew going into the season that Detroit and Ottawa had closed the gap on Tampa and Boston as both of those teams have been on slight decline as their core ages and fractures. The only real surprise in the Atlantic is Buffalo locking down "worst in the East" through most of the season.

I wasn't sure where to put this but it is a pet peeve of mine.

"Compete" is not (and never will be) a noun :burt:

Boone Jenner played his first game of the season after an injury in preseason - got an assist and Jackets got the win

Would be a surprise if they grabbed a wild card spot this year
