What are you reading?

Oh yeah, I've been wanting to read that...it was on a list of 100 best books of the new century.

When you get to the part with the "Dolphin," it picks up a lot
I will do my best to get there...but it will take some time

and fuck Tom Sawyer. That little prick is fucking evil.

Started A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark last night. I have heard good things about it and it is currently just a standalone book, so why not? Got it for cheap on my Kindle. So far it's a fun steampunk-ish book taking place in Egypt where genies exist and live among mankind.

Just started The Boys in the Boat. God damn, some of those guys had a rough and depressing life prior to their rowing days.

I watched the movie...the great depression must have sucked...but at least college was affordable

Kept seeing the movie pop up, so i figured I'd give it a read first. But yeah they mentioned how basically if they made the freshmen team then they were guaranteed a part time job on campus to hopefully pay the tuition. Didn't even get a scholarship, just the chance to work for it. Different times.

The depressing part was one of the guys basically living on his own at age 10 because his step mom didn't want him in the house, and dad just went along with it.

those are the family values we need to get back to in this country

Finished Red Rising Dark Age. Going to take a break before I get into the sixth book. Saturday at the liberry I got a couple more Dresden Files (Small Favor, Turn Coat), "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy (never read anything of his) and a slim volume by Ursula K. LeGuin titled "The Lathe of Heaven." Written in 1971, it's a clever story and under 200 pages. I almost finished it in one sitting. Brings up lots of ethical questions.

I've read The Road and Blood Meridian...

Blood Meridian is fucking grusome.

I had heard that, part of why I avoided him for so long. I don't like gross for the sake of gross

The Road wasn't gross...but it is dark.

and Blood Meridian definitely had a point to it and it makes it very clear. It leaves an impression, for sure.

I want to start reading Bernard Cornwell's "Grail Quest" series, but my library is missing the first book for some reason. Hard to believe nobody flagged that the "first" book in the 4 book series is missing. I'll ask them to order it.

Stumbled onto a fun detective series set in Victorian England. A Barker and Llewelyn Novel. Author is Will Thomas. It's not too deep and encompassing but a fun read. Looks like there are 10 books in this series. I am about half way though

Watched the movie but haven't had the chance to read the book

not sure I am digging either of the books I am reading.

Tana Franch The Searcher - my wife read it and said I should read it as well...and it is booooooring...dude moves to a small town in Ireland after a messy divorce and leaving his job as a Chicago cop and gets wrapped up in looking for a lost teen. I am maybe 75% through and it is just dragging.

A Master of Djinn - I am enjoying this a little more...but I haven't gotten far enough into it.

"The Road" is on my Top 10 favorite reads.
Finished this a few days ago, a very unique book, I liked the way it was written. Very mixed feelings at the end of it.

Also finished Dresden Files -- Small Favor. I felt like this was one of his weaker efforts. Still not sure if I understood the plot. Finished kind of awkwardly.

Going straight into Turn Coat and then the next 3 Dresden books. I want to finish all the novels before I go back to the short story collections, which I've heard will spoil some of the later novels

finished The Searcher...very slow build to an ending that didn't feel satisfying.

also finished A Master of Djinn, which was a fun steam-punky story that takes place in Egypt in the early 1900s where Djinn and other magical entities co-exist with humans. Fun who-done-it kind of story that just blows up at the end. If you read it, I would recommend the 2 or 3 short stories from the series first becuase they do get referenced in the book.

doing a non-fantasy book now called Wellness. So far, it's pretty good.

I started the next book in the Sandman Slim series, Kill City Blues since I needed a book on my Kindle to pick up in the middle of the night, otherwise I'd be waking the wife up with the book light.

Finished Dresden - Turn Coat. A little better than Small Favor but he seems to be packing too much into each story now, and there's a lot of loose threads. Gotta see it through to the end, I guess.

Going to pick up the next three chapters this afternoon.
