Supposedly similar, yes. Was outlawed in the US until 2007.
Had some in Canada years ago since it was banned in the USA at the time. Tasteless. Unremarkable.
Stuff got a bad rap since it was believe it caused psychosis, but I didn't notice any increase in my psychosis after drinking it.

Yea I read up on it. The abolishment of it was actually pushed financially by wine companies wanting to eliminate competition.
It was expensive (for me) $54 Canadian dollars for a 5th which was $40 USD in 2004.
