Who will replace Roy

probably means they're hiring Hubert Davis

this is the pick the rest of the ACC wanted UNC to make

Yup its Davis.

Expected. But blahhh, good for everyone who hates UNC though.

this is who they wanted, so this isn't exactly an Indiana situation.

UNC doesn't hire people who don't have UNC ties. This is who they are.
May be true but doesn’t make it less of a bad hire when could get most anyone

yeah, it's a clown hire, for sure. If they were going to go with the UNC family, they should have gone with Wes Miller. He has ran his own program for 10+ years now.

Bubba Cunningham is a Notre Dame graduate. He’s the athletic director who does the hiring for the coaches at UNC.

the last time UNC hired a head coach in men's basketball that didn't have any prior ties to the school was in 1952. Cunningham's hire was heavily swayed by Roy and former players.

You can hate UNC more than Satan himself, but even you have to admit that they could have done a lot better than Hubert Davis.

another aspect to look at:

Roy's coaching tree is absolutely horrible, lmao.

He isn't Dean Smith in that regard.

Here are the most notable members of Dean Smith's coaching tree: Larry Brown, Bill Guthridge, Eddie Fogler, Roy Williams. Brown and Williams both won national championships as college coaches. Guthridge took UNC to two FF's in 3 years. Fogler took Vandy to the Sweet 16 and had a stretch where he went 47-16 at South Carolina.

honestly, the best member of Roy's tree is Mark Turgeon and tbh, i'm not sure how much credit you can give Roy for Turgeon's success. Turgeon left Roy's bench in 1992 and didn't get his first HC job until 2000.

Roy Williams' bench is the only staff that Hubert Davis has ever been a part of. That is something I would be concerned about if I were a UNC fan.

While true, this reminds me of one of Jeff Foxworthy's. "You might be a redneck if your family tree doesn't branch."

Fwiw, it looks like he tried to go outside and got turned down. My guess is one of those names that turned him down was Wright considering how much his name came up from people that cover the sport. So once a couple guys turned them down, he probably just went with Davis to keep all the alums happy. No need to piss them all off if you can't get a true big name.

Wright and Few were never realistic options. Neither was Brad Stevens. Those were the only outside names that I saw UNC fans floating.

it depends who they went after. If they thought they were going to get Wright, Few, or Stevens, they were insane. Wright and Few are going to retire at their respective schools, and Stevens isn't coming back to college.

A legitimate coaching search should have included Holtman, Nate Oats, Musselman or Brad Underwood. UNC wasn't interested in having a legitimate coaching search, though. It was always going to be Hubert Davis.

yup, it always going to be Davis. Those three guys you named are probably the only three outsiders that the UNC basketball family would have accepted over Hubert Davis or Wes Miller. Probably sent feelers out, got denied and that was it.

The reality of the replacing Roy Williams means now Hubert Davis will have to perform equal to (or better) than Roy which is just an unreasonable expectation for him and so he will most likely fail. He will try hard but will never be seen as good enough. See Matt Doherty. The truth of the matter is there may be several mediocre coaches who have to be hired until the expectations are lowered enough in order to hire a really great coach. This is the pattern in most places where a really strong leader with longevity is replaced. And that will probably be the case when K steps down.

Duke's coaching search when they replace K is going to be real interesting, unless they just promote Scheyer

It will be a shit show with a new AD since White is leaving this Summer. I wish they had made Cutcliffe AD and hired a football coach but that didn't happen.
