Barry Bonds 1-Yr Stint as Marlins Hitting Coach "Complete Disaster"

Bull.

Fucking.

Shit.

I hate Barry Bonds because of his titanic cheating, but pretending that he wasn't the best offensive player of his generation, pre-PEDs, is ridiculous.

He's the only 400 homer - 400 steal player in the game's history, and almost certainly would have been a clean 500 - 500 player (he had 411 HR and 445 SB after his age-32 season, before the roiding).

The steroids took Bonds from "maybe the best speed/power hitter ever" to best hitter since Ruth, and anyone who tries to claim otherwise is silly, but pretending that Bonds wasn't a generational talent before he took a single shot is almost as stupid.
Pre steroids Canseco was a more feared speed/power guy, IMO.

Barry stole a lot more bases (514 to Jose's 200) and at a much better success rate (78.5%; Jose's was 69%). Even in Canseco's 40 stolen base season he got caught 16 times.

Canseco wasn't as good of a base stealer. Only stole more than 20 bags in 3 seasons in his career. His 40/40 season was an anomaly. He was probably a bigger power threat than Bonds, but he was not a regular 30 steals guy. Bonds stole 30-50 bases in 10 of his first 14 seasons. And 3 of the 4 years he didn't steal 30, he stole 28 or 29 bags.

14 seasons averaging 38 dingers and 32 steals.

"Not a generational talent."

Lulz.

He had about 300 more before the juice. The strikeouts went way down when no one wanted to pitch to him.

He averaged over 38 homers and 33 steals from '92 - '98. Monster numbers.

The strikeout totals went down but his rate also went down.

I get one K every 6.27 ABs (or about 112 per 700) from 1987-2000 and one every 6.83 ABs from 2001-2007 (102 per 700). It's not a monstrous difference but it's more than nothing.

Barry Bonds: The greatest human being, that has ever lived.
