This is a Robbery on Netflix.

4 part mini series about one the largest art heists ever. Crime took place in Boston in late 80s. The show chronicles the events

8/10

Perfect Host
Amazon Prime.
7/10.

Pretty crazy.

Thunder Road

7.9

Independent dark comedy that is more dark drama than dark comedy about a cop who is going through a really rough personal stretch and is starting to break down mentally because of it. I think the lead actor wrote and directed it as well as starring in it. Will be interested to see what he can make next for sure. Available for free on Amazon Prime.

Documentary or a scripted and acted mini series based on it?

Bilderberg - The Movie (only on Gaia)

5/10 - The guy was self-aggrandizing and it bounced all over the place. The weird music and poetry - come on man. We're not watching this documentary for art. The real substance of this documentary could be boiled down to probably 35-40 mins. 5/10 is probably generous.

Enola Holmes - NetFlix

Based on young adult book about the sister of Sherlock Holmes. And the movie felt like it on the surface. However, brief glimpses of the times and issues more than made up for that. All in all, a fun movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even guiltily so.

Give it a solid 8.0

The Hateful 8

Decent movie, but probably Tarantino's worst. It would have been a lot better if it were taken more seriously. Too many dull attempts at humor.

7/10

There is so much with this review that I strongly disagree with.

The only misstep in The Hateful Eight is that Tim Roth's part was clearly one written with Christoph Waltz in mind as it was practically the same character Waltz played in the previous two Tarantino movies. Roth didn't do as good of a job with it, it came across as the imitation that it was and it was also hitting that well of that style of character too many times for Tarantino.

Everything else with that movie was absolutely masterful. It contained 3 of the top 10 performances in a Tarantino movie according to my top 40 rankings:

7. Samuel L Jackson
9. Walter Groggins
10. Kurt Russell

The Marksman - dumb, pointless, yet completely predictable movie. 5/10. Nothing to remember or care about, nothing overly absurd either.

Phobias - utter trash. The directing was awful, dude has no idea how to tell a story. 2/10.

Come Play - some good stuff. Mostly dumb stuff. 4/10.

Was trying (and failing) to find what I remembered being it’s own thread for this movie. Rewatched it again last night after a year or so.

I remember my first watch the digital de-aging was distracting, but only on the first watch. I probably gave it a 9 or 10/10. I might keep it there on rewatch. I did feel like the timeframes jumped around a bit too much to tell this story.

But, what really stuck out (again) and blew me away was Pesci as Russell Buffalino. Look, we already know the actor this guy has always been. Scorsese brought out the rough and dangerous little Napoleon so well in Goodfellas and Casino. But, this role is something else. This guy retires for a long time and just walks back in and crushes this.

The real Russell Buffalino was not full of drama and bombast. He was very subtle. And I’ll be damned if Pesci didn’t capture that subtle but still menacing aspect so damn well.

I tried to find a scene in the movie where Pesci is cooking in a kitchen and talking to DeNiro, starting to key him in on what’s going to go down with Hoffa. And he finishes with a very subtle, but stern look and a quiet “Dont call”. But I couldn’t find it.

This is almost as good of a clip. Pesci is just so good here.

Operation varsity blues: the college admission scandal.

done more like a documentary but not exactly. They re-enact actual audio recordings gathered by the FBI. It explains who the players were and exactly how it was accomplished. I found it to be very informative and had a good pace. Would recommend. 7.5 stars

Jexi (2019)

7.5/10 - Overall, pretty good. Although some things, like the beatboxing and the playing kickball, were just dumb and really unnecessary.

The black chick who worked at the phone store was probably the best part of the whole movie. The bit where she called him a crackhead for being addicted to his phone was fucking perfect. :pound:

Infinite.

Truly horrendous film.

Does not deserve a rating.

I “watched” this the other day. I didn’t even realize I completely phased it out. I was half tempted to “watch” it again, but realized that if it didn’t hold my attention the first time, I am not giving it another 2 hours.

I am not a Mantzoukas fan, but I understand what he is, so I get it. This was not him. He was just sooooo off in this flick.

I typically like Ejofor. He tends to play more intellectual bad-asses. His acting style tends to be a bit more subtle. WOW. Not here. It was almost like he was possessed by Tom Green.

I like Marky Mark. But his roles need to be MUCH more “light”. He does not do hard drama very well at all. Every time he overacts, all I can think of is “The Happening”. If your acting is reminding me of one of the absolute worst movies of all time... not good.

Overall, interesting concept, even if it has already been done multiple times. But this was not a good representation of the sub-sub-genre.

Take Shelter.

Without giving too much away even though it came out in 2011, this is a movie about mental illness with a minor twist ending that I enjoyed seeing. It is about a rural family man with a history of mental illness in the family, that starts succumbing to his own and how that impacts him and his family.

It is currently available on Amazon Prime and was listed as a Suspense, Horror, Drama. Definitely felt more of a drama, but a solid movie. 7/10.

Michael Shannon showing once again that he is an underrated actor.
