Ha. Called that one out last week. This was just the guy I was thinking of. Or Piscapo.....

“You shouldn’t hit me. My sister hit me once....once”.

Casino is my personal favorite. Loved Goodfellas also. Michael Franzese does mob movie reviews on his Youtube channel. He discusses how accurate they portray the mob life.
I’ve passed this by so many times. Is it any good?

Ive enjoyed him in interviews in the past. But then he just felt like a camera whore who doesn’t turn down any chance to yap.

Not really. They are both based on true events although they changed some of the facts of the story. Each is different.

Like I said, fair enough.

No matter what they are based upon, they tried to ride the Goodfellas wave with Casino and failed horribly to me. I could barely finish watching. Actually got sick of Pesci.

I’ve never gotten a read that they tried to ride the wave. If that were the case then the movies should have been closer than 5 years apart.

I won’t belabor this. I’m just thinking it was your perception that Casino was some hackneyed replica by design....and maybe that feeds the impression as much as anything.

I think they are two similar, but independent stories. I can say Goodfellas>>>> Casino myself, but if I went into seeing Casino thinking of it this way I might have been really disappointed too.

I have always been into the mob thing. I've watched the documentaries on the various mobsters so I enjoy the Youtube series while others may not. Several former mobsters are pushing stories on Youtube now. Franzese, Sammy the Bull, and John Alite all do the same thing. I guess they are vying for the attention now.

The last one I watched Franzese interviewed the real Donnie Brasco. I found that really interesting. They had Rudy Guliani on also talking about his time as DA prosecuting the mob.

Out of those three I think I would rather listen to Franzese. I’ll have to check it out.

Curious on the Rudy thing. He was the right guy with the right tools in hand back when he took them down. Now I’m just wondering if he keeps his hands out of his pants for the interview.

I rewatched Goodfellas last week for the first time in years (it’s what prompted the OP)....and it was very good. But, I get where you say you just got tired of it. Even after a few years of not watching it I had to remember how blown away by it I was when I first saw it.
Yeah, I used to watch Goodfellas like 5-7 times a year, hence why after many years I finally got tired of it lol.
I really like the Departed....but my first watch of it didn’t blow me away even close to what my first watch of Goodfellas did.

Maybe that’s a key to any movie or show I rewatch....how did I respond to it the first time I saw it.
Yeah, but sometimes they deserve a second showing. Honestly, I don't know how someone cannot like The Departed, it is soooo good. But I can understand how not liking something the first time would turn you off from a second viewing.

I saw clips of the Exorcist when I was a kid and thought it looked stupid, I watched it finally and it is probably my favorite horror movie of all time and probably a top 15 movie all time for me. Not exactly the same thing, but you get the idea.

I wasn’t super clear about the Departed when I mentioned it. I wasn’t blown away the first time I saw it, but that doesn’t mean I disliked it. It’s a great story full of really colorful characters......DiCaprio is just bad ass to me in this.....Jack is Jack. I’ve rewatched it and enjoyed it well enough.

But, there are only a few shows or movies that blew me so far away on first watch that I’m reminded of that excitement every time I rewatch. It’s not a major discredit to the Departed that I think is damn good, but not on that very exclusive list.

Goodfellas is my all time favorite movie, although hard to argue against GF 1/2.

Casino is probably a notch below but I’ll still stop what I’m doing and watch if it’s on.

State of Grace is an underrated mob movie even if Sean Penn is his usual whiny self in it.

Sean Penn....

Mystic River deserves a place on the list.

I’m not sure I’ve seen this. What Penn mob movie am I thinking of.....Carlitos Way. Is it like that?

Yeah....it’s organized crime in a way. Just never thought of it as a mob movie.

It’s about the Westies (Irish mob in NYC). Penn played an undercover cop who grew up with them to infiltrate them. Gary Oldman and Ed Harris are in it. Oldman stole every scene he was in.

Yep. You just jogged my memory. I love stories from the Westies, a little upset with myself that I forgot it. On remember I do remember Oldmans performance. Thanks.

so you are talking about blowing you away the first time and not rewatching? i stand by stalker and a clockwork orange.

That was kind of by design I think, he portrayed Spilotro very well, though people that were there say the real guy was way worse.
