Euro 2020 (err 2021 now)

I guess UEFA is going to issue some penalty to England for the laser and some fireworks during the National Anthems. At this point, a penalty is anti-climatic. Who cares England is in the final no matter what.

P.S. Did anyone think it was weird seeing Grealish subbed on then off after 30 minutes? Disrespectful? I saw Hansi Flick do that to Sane this year once but Sane was an absolute shitshow when it happened. I didn't see Grealish do anything wrong. It kind hints that Grealish is subpar defensively though.

Its most likely that. The cameras followed him a bit after he got the hook. He wasn’t limping or anything….so the talk went to him being a defensive liability.
Maybe, but I can't understand subbing in Trippier, since he's actually a RB, Sancho would have made more sense.

Maybe he changed the setup to 5 at the back.

There is something negative about Sanchos game I’ve begun the feel that Southgate sees, and I don’t.

They played Sancho against Ukraine and I thought he was great. I think he can create plays like Sterling and don’t see an issue having two such players on each wing.

Best I could figure with Denmark was that having two wings that can create, but maybe not get back so quick on D didn’t feel comfy. I can respect that. Denmark could get out and counter much quicker than Ukraine.

All of that said…I felt like the sub of Trippier was nothing more than hunkering down for a likely extra time. It’s that same thing we see with England playing the ball back way too often. They can lapse into a timid game more than they should. It’s like that spectre of so many crushing tournament losses is still there.

It’s aggravating when you know how well they can push the ball up and create opportunities.

It is basically Sancho or Saka on the right. Sterling on left. Funny how Sterling fell out a bit at Man City this year but Southgate trusts him and he was rewarded. Sancho is the one player on England who has the ability to go one on one with a defender and may have the best individual skills. Southgate seems to favor players who have good defending skills, e.g. why someone like Kalvin Phillips plays every minute in midfield.

So I guess today and tomorrow the last International Summer soccer for 3 years? I am going to enjoy these last two games tonight and tomorrow. Next summer nothing for sure with World Cup in late fall, following year 2023 zip. 2024 next big International tournaments. Maybe next summer and summer after the clubs will return for friendlies here. July 2019 I flew after work to LA to see Bayern vs Arsenal. If Bayern shows up again to USA, I think I will go to all of them.

I thought Gold Cup would be 2023, but it’s 2024. You’re right. We have to wait months longer for World Cup. Fuck you, FIFA.

2023 should have women’s World Cup. Maybe that’s not your jam, but I like summer tournaments so much (and, admitted, the women’s USA is so good) that I’m often very dialed in for this one too.

So it’s just no summer tournament next year to me. Just gave to wait a few more months for Men’s World Cup next year.

I really hope Bayern comes back. I likewise will go to as many as possible.

I do enjoy watching the USA woman. Watch the 3 pre Olympic games and the two Mexico games. Was going to see them in San Jose before COVID hit. So I watch them in World Cup.

I started watching it since I had daughters and one played soccer. It’s not horrid quality, and it helps salve the latest men’s team missing the cup, not getting out of groups, or getting heartbroken in the first knockout.

The quality is good but the one thing missing is the physical part and the dark arts lol. There are no characters like a Luiz Suarez or a Sergio Ramos if you know what I mean.

I coached girls and boys soccer and reffed too for years. Both played some soccer but not really interested in it long term.

Funny thing….my father first put me in baseball, his favorite sport. After a bit I tried soccer and ended up playing 11 years growing up.

My oldest daughter….of course I put her in soccer first. She ended up trying and loving softball and played it for years.

Yeah, I’ll agree with you on the physical part of the women’s game, but I don’t miss the black arts part much.

I played soccer from real young all the way through high school. Nothing else but that.

My daughter tried soccer but had enough by middle school.
Son played soccer one year, then played ice and roller hockey. Still plays as an adult. Started flight lessons at 13. Expensive hobbies for dad. That kept him away from drugs though with the FAA surprise urine tests even to this day as flies commercial now.

Yeah the dark arts are annoying like the biting (Suarez and Rudiger).

Flight lessons starting at 13, nice. My 13 year old self is envious as hell. I would have loved to do that at 13. And it’s got to be worth it since he turned it to a career. Very cool.

You can fly at 13, but can't drive til 16 lol. First lesson one week before 9/11 at 13. Didn't fly again for 4 months since we live near nuclear labs and all nearbye airports were shut down. Commercial pilot pays very well, but COVID furloughed him for nearly 365 days. COVID killed airline travel but is back now. It is funny, big pilot shortage, and then COVID, and they are all furloughed. Just got back to work in last few weeks. All his flights were full so people travelling big time now. Thankfully the government bailouts of airline industry saved his butt.

Wow. England goal in the 2nd minute

Is this the same ref from the Ukraine-Sweden game, or am I being fooled by the pink jersey

Wow. England goal in the 2nd minute
England midfield getting dominated but better up front and defensively. Not sure England can play another 45 minutes of just defense like at the end there. Southgate got is right with Trippier again today though.

Italy deserved to tie this match. They been threatening for a long time

Not liking England’s body language now. Too many big game flops have been like this.

I’m pleased with the refereeing approach here. Fuck all that fake shit. Just keep playing. Maybe once or twice it’s been something that should be called. But I’m not upset. It’s refreshing. Play the hame
