Eh, I'm weird with tips. I always need it to be a round number, always divisible by 5, but always at least 20%+ unless the service is complete trash, then it's 0%.

So, for a $45 bill, it will always be either $55 or $60.

Yes, but usually not all that much from what I know and each place is a little different

One of my buddies was chef, and by chef, went to cooking school, studied under other chefs as sous chef, etc, not just line cook at TGI Fridays

He worked at a mid-high end restaurant, he said only few servers routinely tipped out kitchen staff, and while it wasn't much, that little consideration always got those servers priority

I agree with that. But part of the service experience is whether or not you are waiting around for a table to be cleaned, have someone tell you they can't get you something until some glasses are cleaned, etc.

It's basically a decision about whether or not you are all working as a team, probably earning various wages and sharing in the tips/service charge.....or each person earns minimum wage and one group of people get all the tips.

I mean, this isn't a new concept. Various industries and restaurants have done this forever. It's just that there's some movement in the restaurant industry to make this more the norm now. Frankly, I don't understand the issue. If you don't like it, don't go to that restaurant anymore.

Yep, I have seen that too. I worked In restaurants in HS and early college. Chefs/cooks are the kings but they had better treat the waitstaff and backrooms as royalty also or else all your work is for nothing.

I know more one than one person that relied on being cute to get by in life and as they got older...welp

20% is automatic for me. Always has been.

And you have to like, completely fuck up to get nothing. I think I've maybe done it three times.

If you can figure out how to bring my food out even warm and make sure my water is full, 20%+.

I did not get tipped out as a busboy.

but I also got paid under the table minimum wage...or maybe a little higher...so no taxes taken out.
