North Carolina really doesn't have an athlete that is super beloved. MJ is the most known, but there are a lot of NC State, Duke and Wake Forest (to a lesser extent) fans here that hate all things UNC. Additionally, many of those people are all IN ON the "Jordan didn't retire to play baseball for his dad, he did it because the NBA quietly suspended him for a year over his gambling debts" rumor

tbh, Luke Kuechly is probably the only athlete that is universally beloved in North Carolina

They had those blue and white Pom poms that the astrodome crowd would Shake whenever they played that song (yes we’re the Houston oilers… Houston oilers… Houston oilers number 1). Anyway, I was watching some Monday night game and they were playing that song and crowd was shaking those Pom poms and they panned to sign in the crowd that said “we just hold the Pom poms… earl shakes the Dome!”

I know you were at least half serious about the white guy thing but, even though it’s very close, I think Boston picks David Ortiz over tom Brady. Look, I’m not dissing Brady. Far from it in fact. I’m just saying I think Ortiz gets the nod. Here’s why:

First, lots of people credit the Patriots success more on bill belicheck than Brady. He’s at least equally responsible for that success in most peoples eyes.

Second, Brady left. More than a few fans are bitter about that. I’m not but there are some mass-holes that certainly are angry about that. Ortiz finished his career in Boston even though he could barely walk by the time the end rolled around.

Third, Brady’s success is certainly legendary and unparalleled in his sport but so are the accomplishments of Ortiz. No team has ever come back after being down 3-0 in MLB history. That’s about 100 years of history!! Factor in they did against the Yankees AND went on to the world series ending decades of championship drought at the same time ending the curse of the bambino. That’s crazy. That was such a big deal in Boston that people went to grave sites to leave Red Sox stuff and to tell loved ones who had died that the Red Sox finally won the WS. That never happened for any Patriots SB.

Fourth, Brady has more championships and his best individual performances (Seahawks and Falcons) are certainly epic but Ortiz was just as epic. He literally put the team on his back to beat the Yankees. Two straight walk off hits and some incredible home runs as well. Then against the Rockies it was a different team and he was unquestionably the leader that ever player looked to. And that second Cardinals WS… are you kidding me? He was ON FIRE. That may very well be the greatest offensive display of any modern player in WS history. I can’t believe they kept pitching to him!!

Lastly, Ortiz is just a better guy. Way more accessible to fans. His personality just lifts a room when he walks in. Brady is loved by his teammates but the public rarely got to interact with him. I mean, some Fan tracked down his stolen SB jersey and he didn’t even go visit the guy.

I think Ortiz gets the nod in Boston but it’s close.

I just don’t understand how Bonds gets crucified while Ortiz gets a free pass even though he pretty well admitted to using PEDs. And I always thought he was a bit of a hot headed crybaby. I’ll never forget him being mad at a 3-1 pitch down the middle being called a strike, then him singling a few pitches later, but he gets ejected because he’s mad a strike was called a strike even though the end result was better for the team

Ortiz is probably gonna be a first ballot HOFer while Bonds is gonna have to rely on the veteran’s committee even though Bonds was superior in every way and even bothered to play a position so he could be a real baseball player. Both did the same thing, one was far better than the other, yet one is treated like a hero while the other is pretty well blackballed.

And then there was the whole Dempster beaning A-Rod for using PEDs while being cool with Ortiz.

bc bonds juiced almost his entire career. Ortiz played well past the PED era and was a monster.

You cite one example and you label Ortiz a “hothead”? I watched him his entire career with the Red Sox. When Red Sox players HATED Yankees players (and Vice versa) Ortiz was the voice of reason and calm. He is beloved not just by Red Sox players and fans but by other players and their fans. I think you’ve just got a hard on for the guy. He was even lively as an announcer even though his English was hard to understand at times. The guys a legend. He had about 2400 hits and over 500 home runs. I heard a stat that something ridiculous like 20+ per cent of his hits were home runs. Arguably the greatest clutch hitter of all time in baseball.

And it all almost never happened. He was RELEASED by the twins organization and the Red Sox signed him solely bc he was friends with Pedro Martinez who the Red Sox were trying to sign to an extension. Pedro pushed and pushed and pushed for him to be on the team. The Red Sox had Jeremy Giambi at DH. Once Ortiz cracked the lineup it was over after that.
 
In the 2013 WS (well after the steroid era) he hit .688 with a .760 OBP and a 1.188 slugging percentage. He had 11 hits and 11 scoring plays. He had 2 home runs and 4 extra base hits.

But that Red Sox team probably doesn’t even get to the WS without this epic hit. Down by 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th … 2 outs (naturally)…



Btw… the tigers closer was Benoit. He converted 24 of 26 save opportunities that year including 22 in row.

Bonds was the best player in baseball before he started using.

I don’t like the double standards. Bonds and A-Rod get crucified, Ortiz and Pettitte get free passes.

But there’s plenty of examples. Like not caring about the safety of his teammates while wildly swinging a bat in the dugout at the bullpen phone and throwing a bucket of balls on the field. Dude was full of roid rage and too lazy to play a position

wanna know what I think is “Ironic“? You whining about steroid usage in regards to a game played in 2013. Like this one from the World Series. Cue Mr Big Time…




As they said in that clip… Ortiz was the FIRST lefty all season to take that pitcher deep. He faced 84 lefties that year and none of them hit a homer but Ortiz does it in the World Series… like I said… Mr Big Time is here. 😂
