Coaching Carousel Scorecard This Season

I’m not so sure that Chip is safe at UCLA just yet either TBH. They’d be stupid to fire him IMO but I could TOTALLY see UCLA do that if he loses a few more.

Chip is safe. UCLA is a state school, so their AD can't just fire/hire a coach. There's a whole process they have to go through and have to get approval beyond the President of the university. They also have to get approval beyond the President on salary which limits what they can pay.

USC's AD only needs the approval of the President of the university to hire/fire a coach and he just needs booster(s) willing to write the checks to determine the salary.

How are we feelin about my man Herm out at ASU? IMO ON the field he might be ok but some of that off the field stuff may get him.
thoughts?

That's going to be interesting. The violations themselves are relatively minor. But, there are rumors that Herm knew about and encouraged it. That could be a problem.

I believe that the person who masterminded it is already gone, so that may help Herm survive.

I don't think or have any idea what the hell the folks in Blacksburg are thinking. I know VT is not a blue blood. They do expect success after the norm set by Beamer. The buyout is pretty steep especially for VT standards. Then, the question I always pose by the water cooler: who do they even go after?
IMO easy answer and no brainer, Hugh Freeze. He is already in the backyard and has the inroads in recruiting started by being at Liberty. IMHO he would be very good for/at VT, possibly another Dabo level good.

I just wonder how satisfied (think ego) they will be with him if he drops a few more THIS year with THIS group and then has to retool and start again with a new group next year. If its me, I stay patient and roll with Chip for awhile longer but some of these administration types...Sometimes they do silly things (see Texas Tech currently), we'll see.

That's just it, they don't really don't have a lot of choice but to be patient because of the process they have to go through to fire a coach. The administrative types at UCLA don't have the final say like they do at USC because they're a public school where USC is private.

I can't think of a UCLA coach that has been fired mid-season, where USC fired their last 3 mid-season. Getting fired at UCLA usually means your contract doesn't get extended.

Didn't Jim Mora get fired before their season ended? If I remember correctly, it was after they lost to USC for the 3rd straight year.

Gary Patterson SHOULD be on the hot seat IMO.

There's some belief among team message board types from TCU and VT that Patterson is retiring with Fuente (was on Patterson's staff) being his replacement. I thought it was bullshit when I read it at first on hokie related boards, just wishful thinking from fans wanting Fuente gone, but with TCU types saying similar things, there may be a tad bit of smoke there. My guess is its more that Patterson is done, not that Fuente is going to TCU

I believe Neuhiesel did as well. I think UCLA’s previous two coaches were fired before the season ended. It’s a process but it can and has been done

At GT, Collins was allowed a year 0. At the beginning of the year, I wanted to see 5 wins. Still achievable with VT, Miami, and BC up next.

But there are rumblings, and well earned.

The transition from triple option to pro style is a lot tougher than the transition from pro style to triple option.

I expected more progress by now, but at the same time, last year was essentially a lost year for most teams and I think you have to give him at least one more year, but next year should be bowl game at a minimum

Yes, but that was at the end of his original 5 year contract and they had gotten approvals that they weren't going to extend his contract. What was interesting was that after, I believe, his 3rd year, they offered him a 6 year extension that he turned down. Then he had a losing record over his last couple of seasons.

Currently? That started when they ran Leach off.

I think Chip is safe unless UCLA loses out or something. The O/U for UCLA this year was 7 so going 7-5 or 8-4 shouldn’t be viewed as a disappointment

Which goes against logic IMHO. If you are at a place that is as extremely difficult to fire one as you describe, why would you tie your hands up for that length of time? Was he that good at the time?

Mike Norvell and FSU have performed well over their last few games. They seem to be trending upwards. If he can keep this trajectory going, even after that horrible start, I think FSU fans will be happy. They've got Clemson coming up so we're gonna get to see how much they've improved (or not) very soon.
