Let's look at his 4 games so far.
He came off the bench against a rival and performed well. He deserves credit for a solid win there but it was against a team that hadn't prepared for him and absolutely melts late against quality competition. His next start was a solid win but it was an average team that had minimal tape on him. The next week he was very pedestrian in the first half against a historically bad team. He did better in the 2nd half but Heisman candidate's don't have Heisman moments in the 4th quarter against Kansas. They are sitting down watching their backup after torching them for 2+ quarters. His last game was impressive but it was against a team so bad they have an interim coach.
They have a bye and then have 3 games against the 3 biggest defenses in the conference (2 of which are on the road), and they all now have tape on him. If they average 45 a game through those 3 and the CCG it may be ok to get hype. He won't win but the story could be enough to get an invite.
But a true freshman with elite skill position talent beating trash teams after sitting on the bench for half the season. If he plays for any other program in the country no one is having this conversation right now.
Also on that note, Leach had QB's putting up Playstation numbers year after year but they got no Heisman traction because they were "system QB's." Reilly does the same thing at OU and the starter is automatically a Heisman favorite. What's up with that?
