NL MVP

No, he didn’t do anything but produce all season, even when the season was on the line and he was the best player on a playoff team. Crawford, Muncy and Goldy all have legit cases too. Don’t come up small when your season is on the line

As I added above, Harper could have gone 14 for 14 in that series and the Phillies would have probably still missed the postseason, especially if we're just using bWAR as an approximation of the difference.

I would add too that I am not interested in arguing for Harper specifically since the point you made was a general one.

I’m not backing down from the MVP should come from a playoff team. You aren’t the most valuable if you’re watch the games on tv in October

When I think of MVP, I think “what player was most key to their team’s success”

If your team can’t even make the second wild card, your team didn’t have any success

Once again I ask, does the diamond ring on the bag lady's finger have no value?

Every team fights for and is proud of every win. Every player fights for every hit/out.

It means they still have many successes during a season.
Good for them, make the playoffs if you want the MVP. Give them the best offensive player award. Leave the MVP award for the winners

It's league MVP, not "MVP of a playoff team". Just because a player may have been surrounded by scrubs doesn't lessen his contributions.

Are you saying Mike Trout didn't deserve his MVP awards?
He’s a brittle bitch and he signed a long extension with the Angels. It’s clear he doesn’t care about winning, so no. Give it to someone that has some pride and can stay on the field.

How are you the most valuable player in the league if your team sucks? There wasn’t much value in your efforts if it was all for nothing.

Because they're still adding value to their team? They're still contributing to their teams' wins, even if it is for naught. How is it their fault that the rest of their team couldn't do enough to put together a playoff team? Look at Mike Trout and the 2019 Angels. Yes, they went 72-90... and if they didn't have Trout, they may have very well lose over 100 games. 72-90 is bad, but it still sounds a hell of a lot better than 100+ losses. I've never experienced it as a Red Sox fan, but I sure as fuck never want to see my favorite team lose 100 games. That would be soul crushing.

Again, are you going to blame Trout for the fact that the Angels had a 5.12 ERA in 2019? He had more WAR by himself alone than the entire Angels pitching staff. The Angels got only 10.2 more WAR from the rest of their position players. The Angels entered August at 56-54... not great, but they at least had some playoff hopes. The pitching staff gave up 309 runs in their final 52 games. The Angels pitching staff sucked all year, but it went from being merely below average to absolute tire fire in the last two months, tanking their playoff hopes. Trout had a 1.045 OPS from Aug 1-Sep 7 before getting shut down for foot surgery, so it's not like he struggled while the Angels fell apart.

Also, not a single one of the AL MVP finalists come from playoff teams.

Again, it’s most valuable, you’re not the MOST valuable player in the league if you’re not playing October baseball. A single player keeping his team from 100 losses isn’t nearly as valuable as a player who the team doesn’t make the playoffs without.

The league agrees with you apparently, but that doesn’t make it right.

Either change the name of the award or stop rewarding players for signing long term deals with shit franchises
