Hall of Famer?

falls just short for me, though I do think WAR underrates modern pitchers to an extent (starters throwing fewer innings than they were in the 1980s or 1920s). One of my absolute favorite players and one of the greatest pitchers in Red Sox history. Got to play a huge role in two Red Sox titles and helped break the Cubs drought. Also was hilarious to watch in the field/at the plate.

Postseason stats:

9-7, 2.51 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 154 IP, 117 hits, 133/40 K/BB in 26 games (22 starts)

I’m just glad Mike Mussina made the HOF. Fuck everyone else.

Some of those d00ds got in for other things. Like, for instance, Babe Ruth. Hank O'Day is in as an ump. Lots of the other guys are relievers or Negro League guys.

Lester compares favorably to Jack Morris, who just got in.
He’s never been suspended for making fun of Asians on air though.

one of my favorites. Gets flack for 0 rings, but his postseason performances were very good.
Yeah, I liked him a lot, despite him pitching for those cocksucking Yankees.

And one of those is Tommy John. A travesty that Lester is even considered compared to him.
Yeah, it's a travesty to John Lester. Tommy John is the very definition of mediocre and without the help of Dr. Frank Jobe he would be known as just another stat compiler (career avg. 13W-11L & 3.34 ERA) that never stood out among his peers.

And Lester's ERA? Peak as good as Lester.

John also pitched most of his career in an era with less offense (especially the 1960s) than Lester. Lester also pitched a good chunk of his career at Fenway (a ballpark that's known for being very difficult on left handed pitchers). Despite having a higher raw ERA, Lester's got a better ERA+ (117 to 111).

Despite having a vastly longer career, John's leaderboard appearances aren't exactly striking.

John has one more top 10 finish in his league in ERA and ERA+ than Lester, but both have five full seasons with an ERA+ above 130 (and in three of those seasons, John only made 25 or fewer starts anyway).

Lester has six top 10 WAR finishes to John's four. John did have one more top 10 WHIP finish than Lester, though Lester's career WHIP is better.

Lester finished in the top 10 in his league in Innings Pitched six times while John had four. Lester also finished in the top 10 in games started 9 times while John had only four. John may have had an incredibly long career, but he did miss a lot of time. Lester had twelve seasons in a row where he made 30+ starts and that streak only ended because of the COVID shortened 2020 season (he made all 12 starts). The only times Lester really missed time in his career was because of cancer and an injury in early 2021, where he came back in late April and made 28 starts.

Tommy John is like a better Jamie Moyer IMO, but I just don't think there's enough dominance to warrant a HOF induction.

I agree that John doesn't belong in the Hall. Our difference seems to be Lester. He doesn't cut it for me.

Did I say that Lester should be in? Because I don't think he's a HOFer.

Lester was also the last active player from the 2007 Red Sox.
