Big 12 thread

Family vacations on I-10 across Texas.

Heading west: "JFC are we to New Mexico yet?"
Heading east: "JFC are we to fucking Louisiana yet?"

Yeah it's a big ass state.. some people really think that everywhere is the exact same because it's TEXAS.. when it's not. Panhandle life and beliefs are much different than if you lived in Houston.. which is much different than Austin. People make fun of Austin being weird/too hippy.. while everyone knows the joke about Dallas is it's home to the 35k millionaires. It's what makes this place so great, it's a melting pot.

Never on thanksgiving day.. it's been that thanksgiving weekend or black friday. TCU played UT (2016, 2014), Tech has played us that weekend a few times too (2019, 2017, 2015, 2014)

I was surprised that we hadn't played Baylor that weekend, usually it's a week after or before.. guess they didn't think they were "rivals" despite being less than a two hour drive for them to come to Austin.. But we have played Kansas that weekend, maybe they too are now rivals.

My point is, even with schools like Baylor/TCU being a short drive to Austin, they really aren't rivals. Like Texas can suck, aggy can suck but they always sold out or damn near sold out every thanksgiving game.

I'm a little harsh on Tech, because for the most part they travel well but they aren't aggy. Tom's first year here we lost to Tech at home in the season finale, and the stadium at best was close to 3/4 full, and that was them giving out free tix to students that stayed behind for thanksgiving.

One of the guys that I went to the Piggy trip in September lives in FtWorth. Whenever UT plays there he goes, he said that the stadium atmosphere is nothing like what we experienced in Fayetteville.. and he was there during the Boykin era.

So to me just cause you live close to a school and the other school views you as a "rival" doesn't mean it's a real rivalry game. ou, pig and aggy.. that's the list.. and they all will be together in the SEC is the near future, so it's already a great fit for my Horns.

So it was a lie of the ticket giveaways on thanksgiving vs Baylor and tcu, got it.

Techs still a rivalry

But “LSU is a border state” while he says schools close don’t make rivalries.

I wholly agree that TX/LSU will be a bigger game than TX/Baylor or TX/TCU.

you are right..UT/ou<UT/TCU

Calling Marshall not a rival to WVU is like saying Pitt isn’t a rival to Penn state. It’s absurd and ridiculously wrong.
Marshall and WVU have played a grand total of TWELVE times since the year of our lord 1911…:dhd:
WVU winning all 12. No, not a rivalry… at all.

you are right..UT/ou<UT/TCU

Again exaggerating extremes to nothing that was said.

It’s stupid to claim LSU could be a rival because of bordering states yet dismiss 2 school less then 200 miles away from Austin.

Are we still buddies?

It’s newish and if WVU wouldn’t want a 2 for 1 (they should definitely want that minimum) itd be played more. It’s also the only 2 division 1 teams in the state.

When are you coming back home GR???? Daddy misses you

I half expect that game to be brought back once OU and Texas leave the conference. Both of those schools as well as any other program not in the SEC/BIG are going to have to get creative about revenue generation ASAP and that game DID bring good crowds for both and likely would again. IMO WVU is going to have to swallow it's pride a bit now and play Marshall rather than the mighty Long Island U's of the world OOC  , more money to be made.

I agree on Texas/OU renewing/making new rival games in the SEC. Without looking I'd be willing to bet that every single Big12 home attendance number climb to season high's or close to it when OU/TX come to town, the brands alone regardless of how good or bad the team is will do that. You put that same interest in most of the SEC venues and add a little controversy here and/or a gut wrenching loss there it won't take long at all and there will be some more must see games to hype in the SEC due to it's green horn members. I wouldnt put it past Texas to do something provocative to LSU to heat that up ASAP if for no other reason to reduce A&M's game with em

As far as WVU & me, not happening, just like Jimbo, RichRod, Pat White, Pat McAfee, Steve Slaton and others, WVU and it's goofball "leadership" has shown me all I need to see and I have moved on. Just another program to me now.

I think it depends on what the B12 designation is to the other 4. (I fully expect G5 status) But if they would be given a lifeline as a semi Power status with a larger playoff field I think the money would be semi good. (More then 50% less of what it is now) Yes it’s still less then now but what’s done is done.

But I would be for bringing back that Marshall game for the good people of WV and I’m sure it brought in some revenue for both schools and the networks could market it some.

I miss you

I think you are correct regarding revenue generation for those outside the BIG and SEC. And I think that creativity is going to have to be done through scheduling. The likes of Baylor, TCU, Ok State, etal are going to need OOC matchups with big or semi big names…even if the have to go 2 for 1. Or at least play home and home with the NC State, Arizona types instead of Incarnate Word, Missouri State, etc.

Scheduling and I'm interested to see if the ..... whatever kind of conference (P5 or super/mega whatever they will call themselves) do with their networks. For example if you are the SEC/BIG and you have those networks and you dominate the major networks time slots, do you (and the partners) make a deal of some kind with the "little guys" MAC,CUSA,MWC ect. or even the new Big12 for some content? More eyeballs/advertising dollars for or live CFB games so maybe a few more midweek night games on conference networks? I dunno but have to figure that the "little guys" are going to have to scratch n claw for any money they can.

The quality of the new Big 12 is definitely P not G. It's not on par with the SEC or the B1G, but it is definitely on par or above the Pac and ACC. Just in the last two years, Iowa State (Fiesta), Oklahoma State (Fiesta) and Baylor (Sugar) have WON NY6 Bowl Games. Can you even imagine the Pac 12 or ACC having two teams make - let alone win TWO NY6 Bowl Games? The Football quality and commitment is there.

Texas doing something provocative to LSU? That game will sell itself, 2019 meeting showed that.

I know that osu is not renewing Bedlam once ou leaves the conference.. I'm guessing all the current schools in the Big12 will not schedule UT or ou for the considerable future. Even though I think Tech will play UT every few years or so, since they didn't go scorch earth when the news dropped last summer like the other Texas schools did.

But now that UT and ou are heading into it's final season in the Big12, wonder if this allows ISU/KSU/OSU/KU to renew it's big 8 matchups with Mizzu and NU?

Nobody has ever wanted to see these matchups, and nobody ever will.

The End
yeah.. i figured that those other schools wouldn't..maybe outside a mizz/ku matchup, want to play each other. When I looked at the new divisions that came out from the league.. yikes. Pac gets made fun of a lot but if SC has a good season with only a couple losses, that alone will bring more spotlight to the PAC than if a Baylor/Cincy/osu have a one loss team there.

It was a good run

Jr. is a moron if they kill Bedlam. It would be like a 13 year old girl who has her panties in a twist. Maybe they don't win that often in football but overall Jr. is very competitive and the fans of both schools love the games. And the money involved; are they actually stupid enough to take that kind of financial hit? :tsk:

They will change their minds as soon as their budgets are slashed and they are desperate for money.
