Welcome to the Air Raid era SEC

Just curious. In your opinion, do you think MSU CAN win the conference with any kind of "it" if they are unable to get the caliber of recruits of at Bama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, etal?
Have you ever been to Starkville, Mississippi? It's not a college town that recruits on its own like other towns. Mississippi has some good players, but it isn't like Florida, Georgia, Texas, California, and other hotbeds of highs school recruits. They don't have a ton of tradition. Never really won anything. They have to play LSU, Bama, Auburn, TAMU every year. Then KY and OM. Then one of UF, UGA, UTjr every few years. It's going to be really hard to win there, but if anyone has a chance it will be Leach.

That said, don't think that the SEC teams won't adjust to his offense. We will and we have the players on D to counter it. Everyone thought Oregon's offense was going to be the next big thing. It was good for a few years, then people figured it out. Can Leach build a defense? That could be the key for him.

But, I love having Leach in the SEC. He's just good for college football.

Haver you ever been to Lubbock, TX? It isn't exactly considered for destination vacations either. From what I understand, neither is Pullman, WA.

That is why I asked the question. Leach's system has as good a chance as any of winning at MSU. If MSU could get the recruits some of the other SEC schools do, any system would probably work. I doubt MSU can win a natty, but I don't think Texas Tech or Wazzou ever will either. Too large of recruiting disadvantages to overcome. JMO.

It's not just winning from time to time, it's winning consistently. Leach always wins some big ones, then he also loses a few he shouldn't lose. He will have more talent than he's ever had, but he will play against more talent than he ever has. He'll go up against teams that actually play defense, and have players to match up with this schemes. He'll have days like this last weekend, then he'll have a day where they throw 4 INTs and lose to Kentucky.

You mention recruiting ... it's just different in the SEC. Last year, UTjr was 10th in the country. They were 7th in the SEC. Think about that ... you get the 10th best class in the country, and you have 6 better - 3 way better - within your own conference. Will Leach be able to grab the players that go to Bama, UGA, LSU? Or even UF, UTjr, or TAMU? Not seeing it. So, he'll have better players than he has ever had, but they will be playing against teams almost every week that has better players than him. Also, doesn't help Ole Miss just got Kiffen. That's going to make it even harder to recruit in his own state as MSU is little brother in Mississippi.

Does Mississippi State have any fat little girlfriends?

Having had the misfortune of being in all 3, I would say that Pullman is the gem of the 3, followed by Lubbock, which is only better because it's in Texas, than Starktucky, which is among the worst college towns I have even been to, then they have those awful cow bells. Starkville isn't the worst town in Mississippi I have spent time in, but it's in the top 5. That being said, Leach will still have an easier time getting kids to to to Miss St.

Leach isn't going to win the SEC at Mississippi State.

But let's be real. MSU hasn't won the SEC since 1941. I don't think it's really an indictment on Leach or his system. MSU just doesn't have the resources to compete with the top end teams in the SEC and end up on top. It is what it is.

Leach will do better recruiting wise just because of proximity and he's already got into Texas for a QB a a couple WRs. This SEC defenses will catch up and change.. It can change all it wants to but if you get the right QB and the correct skill players, they will be putting on points.. Case in point the Big 12 look alike game between the best SEC teams last season (LSU vs Bama). Like others have mentioned, MSU or even Ole Miss aren't going to win a conference title, but they will be knocking off a favorite here and there, because if anything, the offense travels and you just don't want an "off" day on defense.

When I read your post, I obviously think of the Rose Bowl in 2017. OU scored a lot of points and we had a damn good D that year. So, I get your point that they will score. The difference is that when an SEC team occasionally plays a B12 or PAC team, it's a one off. Those in the West will get used to it and know what to do. I say this as a fan of a team that had to play GaTech and their option every fucking year. But, after a while, you just figure it out and then it was rare we lost. I think the teams in the East who rotate against MSU might have a tougher time.

Any team that wants to beat MSU on a consistent basis only has to follow Jimmy Lake's blue print when he was Peterson's DC @ UW. Lake's defensive scheme was a match made in hell for Leach.

Thanks, kind of figured someone had a blueprint.

For this year? Coming from experience it is highly doubtful that he will ever win the division let alone the conference. He wins game against teams that are more talented, but also losses games to inferior talented or just an inferior team. But at least when he was in Pullman all of those game had rain or snow, or in USC’s case, paid officials) so he won’t have the issue of poor weather.

I don't see it either...which leads me back to my point. If you can't get the same caliber players, you have to compensate for that with a different "system". Which other system besides some version of Air Raid, Spread, etc puts a coach in a better position to compete with those schools that attract better players than you are able to recruit? If a guy thinks he can overcome such a talent disadvantage by going toe to toe with a team that has better players, good luck with that.

Like the Colonists did against them thar redcoats. Got jump out from behind trees and shoot 'em instead of marching up right in front of them, kneeling down in formation and trying to kill them when you are totally outnumbered and outmanned.

So, using your analysis of all three schools/cities from a recruiting standpoint, Leach would be able to attract the most talent to Pullman, the 2nd most talent to Lubbock and the 3rd most talent to Starkvegas? He's going to have less talent at Cowbell U than he's had at the other two? Hell, if that's the case, he should be coach of the year if he wins a single game in the SEC. He might as well have taken the Vandy job. At least he'd had some smart players to have conversations with.

I agree. And it is just as doubtful that ANY coach will win the division, let along the conference at Miss State...unless they are able to recruit at the same level as the upper tier SEC schools.

I'm not touching conf vs conf.. just saying that Leach and Kiffin will be putting points on teams. Clemson doesn't run an Air Raid like Leach or Kiffin.. they actually run a lot and throw playaction from it.. But we all will enjoy it. People already want to tune into more MSU games already lol

Leach will get his players. Average coaches were getting 3-4 stars. Where is most of the talent in the US? In the south. Alabam, Georgia, texas, Florida, MS. If he will have so much better recruiting at Miss St especially if he starts to win it’s ridiculous. Not comparable to Wazzu.
You mention how SEC teams will catch on but how long will it take. Every team is different. Impossible to know for sure. He hasnt changed his scheme and gameplan for a reason, it works everywhere.

He was getting 2-3 star QB’s at Wazzu, jusg imagine what he can get at school that was ranked around #25 in 2020. The sky is the limit. Remember Dan Mullen was competing for the division with Bama, they were #1 at one point and I think Leach is a WAY better coach and play caller. He’s a genius compared to Mullen. Recruiting defense will also be much easier. That’s something Miss St has always recruiting well....the thing missing for Mullen and over the years was a scheme and offensive weapons. Receivers/offensive weapons are going to flock to Miss St especially if he succeeds in his very 1st year

I hear you but you need to realize he's still going to have a few WTF games during the season. He will get better players but doesn't mean he will repeat what he did at tech in 2008.. that took some time to build.. Not sure if MSU really has the patience for him, but we'll see.
