I have a buddy who used to eat that first, and then complain that the "first piece of bread always gets stale". I pointed out that is why the heel exists, to be teh sacrificial protector of freshness.

Yeah, I've always eaten it.

Like @fordman84 said, it's there to protect the rest of the loaf, so you eat it last. My kids would never eat them growing up and I would always make a big deal about it; eventually they got the idea that "daddy LIKES the heel, make sure he gets it!"
