Your punk Mount Rushmore

The punk Mount Rushmore can just be Mount Ramone and then we don't have to argue for hours about it.

I hate these things....the word "YOUR" in the thread title changes everything. I read it as MY personal mt rushmore.

If I were listing THEE mt rushmore of punk, it'd prolly look a little different.

This is basically how I did it too but with the added context that I know everything and no one else knows fuck all about the subject :noidea:

I'm not really all that into punk, although I do have a soft spot for Rich Kids on LSD

Now that I’ve looked at some of the other post and thought pabout it some more, there’s too many damn punk rock bands to list.

Black Flag, The Misfits, Minor Threat, 7 seconds, Bad Brains, the Ramones, a local band and one of my favorites F.U.C.T, The very beginning of the Beastie Boys, Fugazi, the Crumb suckers, body count And maybe helmet they had one hell of a mosh pit the couple of times I went to see them.

Bunch of poser lists. We all know the truth.

Fall Out Boy
Good Charlotte
Sum 41
Avril Lavigne

There’s a good docuseries on epix called “Punk.” Covers the early Detroit/New York days, late 70s/British scene, hardcore scene, little bit of the grunge scene, and the 90s mainstream breakthrough.

Executive produced by Iggy Pop himself, commentary by just about everyone you’d want to hear from about it. Worth doing a free trial to check out if you’re interested in such things.

Iggy Pop
The Ramones
Blondie
Talking Heads

Mt Rushmore is for founders and iconic bands
Not to be an ignorant dick, but…

Talking Heads?

I’m no longterm expert on ‘em. Liked em as little dude, when I didn’t like a lot of contemporary shit that I have found a way to like now. But punk is never what I thought of em. Or where my appreciation of em lead me.

Wanna share why?

Full disclosure: them and the Ramones are pop to me. And I’m not a hater of pop
Music. Jus saying. Talking Heads opened a door to British Pop for me way back when. Even though they aren’t either of those things. So I’d like to hear your reasoning, out of respect.

And Sex Pistols not being on every single Mt. Rushmore is weird to me. In the same spirit of full disclosure.

Agree about talking heads. They were more of the first of the post punk/new wave bands.

Disagree about the Ramones. Their music wasn’t popular until well after their prime.

I personally don’t include the Sex Pistols because they weren’t any good. They’re iconic for their burnout more than anything. You can argue that earns them a spot, I don’t think they’re necessarily a wrong answer. For me though, so many of their contemporaries were inspiring beyond the spectacle/attitude aspect of the thing.

Talking Heads were playing the punk bars in New York early and really are a branch of pop punk. But, punk nonetheless. Your musical journey because of your exposure to them has been repeated by many. I consider CBGBs to be a hallowed place when it comes to music. Talking Heads were early on pioneers. 1975 or so.

As for the Sex Pistols, they were basically a put together boy band.

Don't it make you feel sick?

Sounds just like Bieber. And it's on the same album as "Judy is a Pop Punk"

The term you're looking for is nu wave not punk.

They're first gig was opening for the Ramones, but I agree with smitt that the Ramones were kinda pop. Most would call the TH new wave, but I always thought of them as "smart pop" or "intelligent pop". They are awesome, and certainly had punk influences, but I agree that they don't really fit the punk moniker.

Isn't a whole lot of music "kinda pop" though? Almost all of the bands being mentioned here could be described that way.

I'm fine with keeping The Talking Heads out of this discussion but if the Ramones are not included? I've tried pasting a few different GIFs now but none of them truly captured my disgust. That's the degree we are talking about here
