1st CFP POLL Qs???

I am interested in how high they will rank Alabama. In the famous words of Shannon Sharpe in regards to the 4 team playoff: "This is not a playoff. This is the Alabama Invitational Tournament". Does the 12 team playoff have the same thoughts?

Alabama is a lock if they win out.

Oh for sure. I am thinking in terms of the 1st CFP Poll.
The CFP can’t this round of rankings, but it will be interesting how the committee treats teams with 1-2 losses that DON’T have to play in a CCG. Some year’s that extra game been an important data point for them. Other years they never even mention it.

Here are my questions:

Where is undefeated Indiana ranked? Especially compared to a team like Penn State.

How does the committee rank undefeated ACC/Big 12 teams (Miami and BYU) compared to the 1 loss SEC/Big Ten teams (Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, etc.)

What G5 teams make the rankings? I assume Boise will be the highest ranked G5 team but how many other teams make it? Who else is waiting in the wings for that G5 bid? Is Boise ranked high enough to potentially earn a bye if there's a major upset in the Big 12 or ACC?

Will be interesting. Zero loss teams. Good wins or just "meh" wins or "that team sucks" wins? 1-loss teams. Good wins? Good loss? Bad loss? Good wins and good loss? Good wins and bad loss?

Boise may well be better than the ACC or Big 12 champ. They'll have to look at SOS, SOR, etc to decide. Right now, I'd say and undefeated BYU would have the advantage because of the SMU win. Miami doesn't really have a great win on their resume IMHO. But if they also beat SMU in the CCG..... If they think Oregon is real strong, then Boise has to be considered that as well based on the head to head. Wasn't a lot of difference in the Oregon win over Boise and the one over Ohio State.

Just perusing schedules both to date and to the end of the regular season, I think where they rank BYU, Indiana and Miami may tell us what they value the most.

Indiana only has "meh" wins but they are the only one of the three that has a chance for a "signature" win remaining on the schedule. Ohio State on 10/23.
BYU has the SMU win (if it is valued) but no more opportunities on the remaining schedule for another significant win.
Miami also has a bunch of "meh" wins and doesn't look to have another chance for a "signature" win.

Doesn’t really matter. The early CFP rankings are for entertainment and to spur conversation. The last one is the only one they actually do any work on, we have seen that time and time again

My top 15 (based on what I think the committee will do)

#1. Oregon
#2. UGA
#3. Ohio State
#4. Miami
#5. BYU
#6. Tennessee
#7. Texas
#8. Penn State
#9. Indiana
#10. Notre Dame
#11. SMU
#12. Alabama
#13. Texas A&M
#14. LSU
#15. Boise State

Projected CFP:

#5 seed Ohio State vs. #12 seed Boise State
#6 seed Tennessee vs. #11 seed SMU
#7 seed Texas vs. #10 seed Notre Dame
#8 seed Penn State vs. #9 seed Indiana

First 4 OUT:

Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss

While they do change them up week to week somewhat, it’s not like they start wholesale every week. The committee has a tendency to justify their early rankings by keeping them stable in the subsequent weeks

Yeah. I know the most famous phrase is, “We still have a lot of football left to be played.” My reply was to the original post title: 1st CFP Q’s

that telecast was a beating yesterday "Indiana was disrespected..BYU was disrespected.. Penn St behind Texas is disrespect...lol"

Looks pretty good. I’m with Greg though. At this point BYU at 9 seems low. Undefeated. Handed #13 SMU their only loss on the road and absolutely destroyed #23 K State by 30. But like the others mentioned during the telecast still additional time and games to sort everything out.

Indiana should be ranked above Ohio State. Neither team has any resume enhancing wins, but at least Indiana is undefeated. Penn State has a "quality" loss, but when you don't have any good wins to offset that loss then who gives a shit.

Here's an article about some of it.

Anger at 1st CFP Rankings

Here's part of this guy's rant about it.

"BYU (No. 4) has a better strength of record than Ohio State (No. 5), has played roughly the same quality schedule as Texas and has two wins against other teams ranked in the committee's top 25 -- as many as Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Tennessee and Indiana (all ranked ahead of the Cougars) combined."
This is just my opinion but the committee is more impressed with an undefeated B1G schedule than an undefeated Big 12 schedule...even if the B1G schedule ain't a real tough one.

Here's another one of his rants.

Let's do a quick blind résumé here.

"Team A: 8-1 record, No. 13 strength of record, two wins vs. ranked opponents, loss to SP+ No. 22, .578 opponent win percentage

Team B: 7-1 record, No. 15 strength of record, two wins vs. ranked opponents, loss to SP+ No. 91, .567 opponent win percentage"

Team A is SMU Team B is Notre Dame. While data might flip the two of them, there isn't that much difference in where the committee ranked the two.

I love this format. People said it would devalue the regular season. LMAO

I picked up on this comment last night that surprised me. While Georgia has the #1 SOS, Alabama hasn't played one team that has a losing record so far.

If schedule difficult is to be valued much, it is very possible than more than one three loss SEC team should get in...especially if those losses are all close to the best teams. Question is will that value it that much?

And, what happens when Miami and BYU lose their CCGs?

how does Ohio State not have a resume enhancing win but Penn State has a quality loss. same same game
