@Thiefery congrats on your 3 stars.

Bobby Burton's take on Texas taking another 3* DB this early in the cycle.

quote:

Bobby Burton -

Well, Texas took another three star recruit on Friday. Austin Anderson defensive back Yaheim Riley is not among the top 100 players in the country by any service. Even more, he’s not even ranked among the top 100 players in the state by at least one.

So what in the world are Steve Sarkisian and Brandon Harris thinking? I mean, Texas should only be going after four and five stars. Right?

Wrong.

Just ask Cam Williams, Cole Hutson and Ethan Burke from the 2022 recruiting class. Or ask Tre Wisner and Trevor Goosby from the 2023 class.

How would this Longhorn roster look without Alex January, Parker Livingstone, Ty’Anthony Smith, Nate Kibble and others from the 2024 class?

Heck, even ask three more NFL draft picks from the class of 2021 - Hayden Connor, Gunnar Helm and Barryn Sorrell.

Facts are, “stars” mean little these days when it comes to Texas football. What matters most is a) the eye for talent that Sark and his staff seem to have and b) the development they bestow on the recruits once they arrive on campus.

Look, I was one of the inventors of the star-based ranking system. Literally.

I was in the room when we decided to go with “stars” instead of “chips” or “diamonds”
.

I am well aware of the statistical probability that they result in.

But I have long held that 3 star prospects who sign with elite programs, programs like Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, etc., also have a disproportionate chance of making the NFL than 3 stars that sign elsewhere.

Why?

Because certain programs get more of the players they want, no matter where a player is ranked. Sure, there are “hits” and “misses” of three stars. But the exact same could be said for four and five stars.

I feel more confident than ever when Texas adds a three stars recruit. Maybe star chasers will disagree.

But to them, I say look at Sark’s track record at Texas. And look at Yaheim Riley’s film.

If Riley is a three star, then give me all of those I can get.

@Thiefery congrats on your 3 stars.

Here is what I have seen discussed on other paid for sports boards.

- Stars still matter ... the statistics simply prove that.

- BUT, a lot of 5* and 4* don't pan out and if you now have to pay them premium $$$, you can only take so many of them.

- So, the top 100 will get spread out even more than we thought because you can only afford to take a chance on a few. And you better get it right. Think of what Miami paid Cantwell, the No. 1 player this year, a LT. Very few LTs start right out of high school. It just isn't done very often. I can think of 2 at UGA in the last 30 years. If he is a miss, or even delayed, Miami has spent a ton of money they can't spend elsewhere ... it's like having unproductive cap space in pro sports. Meanwhile, UGA who missed out on Cantwell, can take the millions designated for him and give it to 2 or 3 other lower 5*, high 4*. When Ravioli recommitted and went to Nebraska, UGA took that money and snaked Bolden away from FSU. So far, that's paid off for UGA.

- So finding the diamonds in the rough, or the 3* and low 4* who isn't getting offered big money but who you think can develop and then pay later once he has earned it becomes valuable. Teams with large staff - UGA, Bama, tOSU, UT, etc. - can find these better, and then teams with a record of development are going to do better with them.

One final thing ... I think you will see the big flagship universities sticking closer to home. UGA is doing far more recruiting in Georgia than before. USC is going after Cali players more than OOS players. My guess is that Texas will do the same thing. The kids you can get to stay home are less likely to transfer out, have closer ties to support systems, and likely have a deeper tie to the university.

I like our diamond sniffers…unless it’s a QB.

B2B NC Stetson Bennet says hello. Hell, your own Baker Mayfield says hello.
Baker was an xfer…just like Kyler…just like Jalen…last two BIG STAR recruits haven’t panned out.

Shit, we’ve hemorrhaged better QB’s than what we’ve recruited lately. Rattler was never a 4-5 star talent…Arnold either this far.

I was thinking that Baker was a PWO to begin with. I get your point. Exceptions don't prove the rule.

Well if you ain't digging at a rusty cow you should be. It is your duty and obligation as a land thief to irritate the crap out of those weirdos in Austin.
you mean these weirdos in Austin??

I’ll dig … we’ve been told Texas has more money than god. Not here they didn’t. It’s been a UGA and Texas race until it wasn’t. USC did good here. Hometown boy. Their GM is concentrating on Cali bays and doing well.
Just cause Texas has more money than God doesn't mean they will get in every recruitment.. luckily they don't put all their eggs into one basket and have 3 other TEs on the board.

Not worried one bit about recruiting anymore.. they are landing terrific players and developing them. It's not like we spent a lot of money on a QB or DL that has been a complete bust and gone away.

he's an Austin kid.. and the last time i checked.. we had a walk on from the city who became an all american... lol

so basically.. it's time to play moneyball and hire a GM that knows how to recruit FCS all stars??

At some level, I think that's true. It makes sense. The scholarship limit has increased by 20 players. There is no longer a 30 player limit per year. You have the transfer portal. I think you will see schools go after as many HS blue chips as they can afford within revenue share, but will reward kids who have actually accomplished something. And then they are going to add a fair number of players who are development guys.

Texas, Florida, Georiga, Alabama, Louisiana, Cali to a degree, maybe Ohio have the advantage of trying to get local kids to stay home.

Yep. Baker walked on at Tech. Transferred when Coach GQ brought in Mahomes.

Hurts and Murray were very highly ranked. Murray needed to grow up some. Hurts was mature and showed it when he was replaced by Tua at Bama.
