All Star Tuesday Morning

is this essentially an "expensive poops" vortex?
it's apparently an anti-higher wage pro low wage + tip vortex

last night lawn bowling team went to nearby bar, we paid half cash and split rest on CC. Waitress reminded us to tip on total...I kind of laughed but she pointed out she'd been screwed many times....i told her not worry, we tip a solid a 5%

Correct, you can't tip

if you have cash, I suppose you could leave some.

Other restaurants are going this direction, and so long as the fee charged actually does support higher wages, I support it.

I've said before I'd rather just pay 20% and not tip knowing 20% more went to employee's
I always carry some cash when going to a restaurant. I don't tip with my card.

Do you think a busboy works less hard than a wait staff?

I went to Ireland and almost nowhere accepts tips there. It's a different concept, but I still got food and drinks there.
Ahhhhhh yes, the ole "it's done somewhere else, so lets do it here" thing

Do you think a busboy or line cook works less hard than a wait staff?

And you already said it's dumb as fuck, but that you are also "sincerely curious" about how it is going. That's not curious....you are just looking for confirmation bias.
We went to Brasa last month

Mrs Pnk got their smothered chicken, a dish she's had many times. She felt it was a little light on sauce and asked for more.

Waitress said she could, but it wasn't easy as going to get additional side (I'm not sure why, I didn't ask) so would take time. Mrs Pnk said that was fine and no big deal and not to bother

Server offered to bring her new plate, Mrs Pnk declined
so server, despite not working for tips, apologized and still comp'd the meal

I was disappointed I couldn't tip her extra.

Surly last time I was there was same

the places I've gone, I've noticed no decline in service and they seem to be hiring despite labor shortage, so they're doing something right

Broders assigns a fee AND allows tip, but I tipped less since they already tacked on 15% for higher wages

and Lions tap which pays minimum wage put up a sign bitching about their inability to hire staff....

I rarely carry cash unless I am going to horse track

I don't own the business, so it's not my job to decide how to operate it. Not sure how I'd do it if I owned a restaurant because I've never run the numbers or had to manage a restaurant staff.

I do know the restaurant I'm going to on Friday night is booked out for a month, so they must be pretty confident in their ability to staff the joint consistently. I also know the places I've went the last few nights don't operate on that system and it is tip based. They were also busy.

I've also for years paid a 20% minimum if you have over a certain number of people at the table. There can be different systems that all work.

Leftover habit from expense report days. Now I justify it by making sure my tip goes where it is intended. BTW, I have tipped busboys too. Spent too many hours doing that to not appreciate their hard work.
I'm a chronic over-tipper from my days in various jobs that depended on tips to make most of my money.

But I do tip with my card most of the time because then it is much more likely to be reported for tax purposes. If I'm paying taxes and tipping well, those workers should also be paying taxes on those dollars.

Oh, I mean, I don't own the business either. I just like to...tip and know it's going to the person who provided me service.

You're comparing things coming out of the pandemic, which was handled like trash in your state, which is great that people are "motivated" and such.

I wonder how "motivated" they will be over time when they were making $10.50/hr + tips, as opposed to you know, $17/18 an hour. As the kid grabbing dishes will make that same $17/18.

I mean, I'm not an expert level 100 numbers guy like pnk, but if I'm getting 4 tables an hour at 25% at a non-Red Robin place, I was probably pulling in more than a flat $17/18 an hour, but what the fuck do I know?

one of my lawn bowling/curling teammates is below average tipper

he's upset the new standard is 20% and he thinks 15% is solid

The 20% goes to the employees....it gets spread around to all of the employees and not just your specific wait staff. What the fuck are you not understanding here?
So if my server really sucks the standard 20% goes to everyone regardless?

About how to manage a restaurant staff? I'm guessing almost nothing....just like the rest of us.
