Anyone run into spalling bricks?

Joanna Gaines did it to a fixer-upper, but I thought it was just cosmetic.

I ran onto a lot of that on YouTube when I was looking
There were a lot of people doing it just for the look alone.

I'll take a photo when I take the pup for a walk later, but I wonder if this is what happened to a neighbors mailbox. it is brick and I noticed the other day a pile of rocks on one side of their mailbox (the dog stops at each one, so I get time to look around). A large section of bricks looks like a top layer of facing just peeled off. maybe someone/thing hit that spot and caused it, but looks like the bricks in that are layering. Luckily their brick is a different color and hopefully different batch so my mailbox, or house, don't go through the same thing.
