Arizona State pulling scholarship offers

I follow recruiting closely (too closely) ... until you sign the LOI, nothing is final. There are committable offers, and non-committable offers. Most are non-committable. On August 1, "official" offers can be extended. They can be pulled, but smart recruiters are careful how many official offers they make. My post showed how it is normally handled with someone who is given an official, but non-binding offer. It lets both sides save face. An post like this should not be written about a team that is a good recruiting team as it's not a good look. No team will or should give out more "official offers" than they have room, so let's say 25 (although that can be more or less). You also have to look at the 85 limit, but that is way more complicated.
These three weren't non committable.. they took their commitments and were part of the class. The staff pulled those scholarships, which is why those three are now looking for another spot. ASU basically took their commitments just to set the floor, soon as better players were open to committing as well (or transfers), they dropped those players.. dirty dirty game.

I know you follow recruiting like I do, but what I typed is exactly how it is done, and should be done. It allows both sides to save face. Now, if your point is that they won't ultimately let one of those players say, "nah, I'm good and will come and earn PT," I agree. At some point they will say no, we don't have room. But that should rarely if ever happen. Smart recruiters handle it like I wrote in my post. If what you typed is how Hermann does it, perhaps we now see why he has a hard time with recruiting.
No, smart recruiters string players along til the big fish decides to commit to them or elsewhere. ASU panicked and now they look bad, as they should, for taking those commitments only to pull them months later. Like I said, ASU better keep winning because other recruiters will be using this as ammo to the player and their parents repeatedly.

I understand what they did. I didn't say these were non-committable offers. I was explaining how the process works in general. These were official offers where a scholarship was extended. All that said, what I posted as to how this is handles is correct. You go to the player and tell them other things have come up, that they have an offer, but they should look around. If you and I understand what this means, the players do. The player then releases something that says it was their decision to reopen their recruiting. 99% of the fanbase is sorry to see them go, while the 1% losers like you and me who follow recruiting know exactly what went down. Everyone saves face. If the player is stubborn, there could be a time where the school has to withdraw the offer, but that rarely if ever happens to the top recruiters. Smart hasn't done that in his 5 years, and I can assure you he has processed many a commit (and even scholarship players).

The only thing we really disagree on is that I say a good recruiter will say it in such a way that the recruit is allowed to save face. You seem to say they go straight to "pull the offer" mode. Maybe that is what Herm did here, but no one says he is a recruiting savant. Maybe that is how Hermann operates. But, good recruiters don't do that.

We'll have to disagree, I think, as I am not sure where you are saying I am wrong. But, what I posted is exactly how good recruiters do it. Now, I agree they string players along and good recruiters rarely even get to that point. But, when it happens, what I posted is how it is properly handled. Look Smart is one of the best recruiters there is, and he manages his roster better than anyone else not named Saban. I've watched him closely for 5 years. This is how he, and other top recruiters operate.

See Saban and Kirby know the game.. Saban trap doored a kid the night before signing day in February.. He got criticized, now it didn't slow him down from winning another championship later that season, but even he has been cautious with the way he does it.

The wording from the decommitment was bad for ASU.. "pulled scholarship" is not what you want to hear.. Part ways, best interests, etc is much more easier on the ears

Got to believe that Herm is still trying to figure out this college game.

Well, that last one was the way they all should have been. Herm needs to learn the game.

Recruiting is a slimy cesspool no matter how some silver tongued devil tries to spin it.

Only nastier sewer is college basketball recruiting....aka as AAU shit.
especially with the bag circuit... pay the kid, pay his handler (always an Uncle), pay a coach

Hey I’m on your side this time!
Some people have zero sense of humor, and then there's the rare person who has a negative sense of humor

There is truth to that, but Herm played College Ball @ Cal, so he should know how the recruiting game goes from the other side of the fence. That goes for all of the Coaches from the NFL that head back to College. At one point, they were part of the recruiting / playing game as a player and / or assistant coach. Shouldn't be that shocking - even though recruiting has intensified since their time in school.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know if you actually take a player.. you better be sure they are a take when you say yes and make an edit. He and his staff will tread lightly after learning this experience. Mack did it here at Texas too, he didn't pull any stunts like that leading into NSD anymore after recruitniks and THSFB coaches called him out

Watching FOX halftime show the other day with Tony Gonzalez, Bradshaw, Howie Long, Stahan, etal. Ribbing Tony one asked, "Didn't you go to Cal?" Before Tony could answer Bradshaw piped in "Well I'm pretty sure there isn't but one of us on this set that would have academically qualifed for admission to Cal."

Unless you live here, a lot of people don't understand just how strong, tight and influential that group can be. Hell, there are a lot of people that DO live here that still don't understand it. The group will also tell a college coach which players they really should stay away from. That falls on deaf ears sometimes but they still let 'em know.

And the Texas High School Football Coaches Assn is multi generational. Ex: Graham Harrell's grandad was one of the leaders of it back in the day.

I saw Tony Gonzalez play BOTH Football and Basketball in person @ Cal!
