Average guy vs 95mph

How was your hand when you caught him?
it wasn't pleasant, but my mitt had good padding. I think I still have it in a box in my garage.

Holy crap.
It's a different level. The one guy who "only" threw 92 made it up to AAA with Tampa. The other guy never got a shot at affiliated ball, and kicked around in the independent leagues for a couple years.

And I played low-level D-3 ball.

I had tickets right next to the bullpen at D*dger Stadium once. It’s amazing how hard they’re throwing and the sound the ball makes when the catcher catches it, even during warmups.

The most impressive thing is how effortless they get that velo. The ball just explodes off their fingertips.

One of the things that simply doesn't translate to fans is the speed of the game. Can't really get a good sense of it from TV or in the stands. Step up in the batters box and its a whole different level when you see it up close.

I played HS baseball and I think the hardest any kid pitched was about 85 MPH. Even that was hard to turn on.

I'd fall out of my shoes trying to hit 95.

Not a chance in hell. You have a better shot at a machine, because a pitcher can move all over the zone. And at least you know a machine won't fuck with you and drop a slider or a changeup on you.
^This.

It's believable that anyone with a modicum of skill can learn to react a little bit better to hit a 95 mph fastball out of a machine, at least badly. But a MLB pitcher, or even a MiLB one, can locate pitches and even vary release point to confuse the hell out of the batter.

The fastball's not really the true test, anyway. I was watching the Braves-Nats game a couple of days ago, and Charlie Morton employed a curveball that would be impossible for all but the top tier of pro batters to make contact with, even part of the time.

Yeah, the challenge wasn't to hit against MLB pitching, it was to make contact with a 95mph fastball (straight fastball I might add). Obviously, if you throw in variables like location, movement, and change of pace and it becomes very impossible. Hell, it's nearly impossible for major league hitters to do it.

Dude's swing is shit. He's robbing himself by lunging and not staying back. Way to move yourself 1 foot closer to the pitcher, derp.

Anyone can cheat and hit a 95mph pitch though. Just slow your swing and start really early, and his bat drag really helps with that, and you can make contact. Try to pull one, then try to hit one with a 10mph speed change mixed in :)

Fastest pitcher I ever faced, this huge kid, I couldn't hardly see the damn ball. I moved back as far as I could, catcher says to ump He's out of the box! Ump says that's alright, if he manages to hit it I'll call him out.

So people think. I give him credit. Obviously not a ball player and he was able to barely tip one.

Fun.

Now try to return my 95mph serve without knowing whether it's a slice, topspin or American twist....and return it well enough so I don't smash it in your face.
