I fully admit I’m not sure how KenPom rankings work but how in the hell can West Virginia be at 23 while ISU is at 46 with the same record?

ISU has like 3 wins over tournament teams this early and no bad losses while WVU has a win over UAB and that’s about it.

KenPom is a predictive model and isn’t solely based on resume. It’s more interested in identifying the best teams, not the best resumes

Big 12 has completely separated from the rest of CBB this year. Hands down best conference. Top to bottom its ridiculous.

Good depth for sure. But do they have any real “top” teams?

Does any other conference?

Kansas, Baylor and Texas I would say are all top 10 teams, which makes them all a FF contender IMO. Then you have Houston, Uconn, Zona and UCLA in the P12 and Tennessee, which I would say would be my top 8 right now. I know Purdue is undefeated, and they'd definitely be a 1 seed, but I don't love them long term.

Conference Play Starts Saturday

Texas Tech at TCU
OK St at Kansas
Texas at OU
Baylor at Iowa St
WVU at K St

Every conference game this season is must watch. Every team is currently, 51st or better in KenPom. Every team is currently top 50 in the NET. League is insane. 8 bids at a minimum, is my guess. Hell I think 7-11 conference record would probably be enough for WVU to make the tournament.

Hahahahaha, WVU might not win another game the rest of the way. But I’ll be a little easier on them this year as they actually have something close to an offense. Would 16-14 get WVU close?

Assuming they get all their games in(31 total), I do think 17-14 would have them near the cut line. Assuming Pitt, Florida and UAB, all stay inside Q2, WVU would be 10-14 in the first two quadrants. They'd for sure have a top 10 SOS. Their predictive metrics are already good, and even going 17-14, they'd still have, I'd guess top 40 resume metrics with SOR and KPI. FWIW, WVU is projected to finish 11-7 in league play. Which if that happened would probably put them on the 3/4 line and potentially playing in Columbus the first two rounds.

An 0-2 conference start. I figured this.

There certainly are more factors in a game but when you miss 11 FT in a 7 point loss and 18 FT in a 6 point loss, it’s fair to say that costed you. This isn’t the first nor will be the last this has happened.

I get it that missing that many free throws in two games is frustrating and it looks bad. But free throw% isnt even a top 10 most important in determining the outcome of a basketball game.

Even looking at these two games

Saturday WVU was 20/38 from the line and KSU was 21/34. Both teams were putrid from 3 and similar inside the arc. The difference was KSU made 3 more baskets because WVU had 9 more TO's and 7 fewer assists. On the flip side a lot of that could be negated(hence OT) because WvU had 14 more rebounds with 7 being offensive.

Last night, WVU still made as many free throws as Ok State attempted. The difference was 48% field goals to 36%. Ok state made 6 more shots which more than made up for the +5 that Wvu was at the line.

Only thing I’ll argue is those other factors you stated are contested. FTs are not. You can’t be missing 18 FT in a game and expect to win. Specifically when that game goes into OT. But yeah, there are other factors.

Oh I 100% agree that missing that many free throws should be inexcusable. And when watching as a fan there is probably nothing more frustrating than watching bricks on a shot that has the word "free" in it. Especially key 1 and 1's.

Just wanted to point out that free throws are mostly a non factor and if they are its rate that matters. Try and help ya not dwell on it as much. I know when I started to do a deeper dive it helped me not lose my mind quite as much.

A great example is if the worst free throw team in the country around 55% were fouled every single possession and shot to their %. They statistically have a top 20 offense in basketball on a point per possession basis.

Kstate just dropped 116 on Texas

36/60 from the field, 13/24 from 31/33 from the line.

Unreal. Legit squad. Keyontae Johnson being able to play basketball again and being a total beast is awesome. Especially after seeing what happened last night to Hamlin.

Gonna be nuckin' futs fo sho. Any team that gets their dauber down because of losses better get it back up or those 2-3 losses will turn into 7-8 real quick. Same goes for a team that gets some wins in a row and thinks they're flying high. They'll turn around and be 4-8 if they get too full of themselves. This is the perfect example of the coaches cliche "one game at a time". Ain't no place for gloating or pouting.

Hell, Kansas is 2-0 at the top with a 2 point and a 3 point win. Couple of baskets the other way and they are 0-2.
