Rose violated a rule that he knew would get him kicked out of baseball. Was no secret that if you get caught betting on baseball, you get kicked out. Hell, it's most of the reason that MLB has a commissioner in the first place.

The steroid guys cheated, yes, but they weren't facing lifetime bans when they started. And there's guys like Whitey Ford and Gaylord Perry that cheated just as much in the Hall, and are celebrated for it. Selective outrage.

Let's not rehash the argument. Guys who cheated for a performance edge and changed the outcome of games are not the same as guys who merely profited off the outcome of games.

Same with the two-wrongs-don't-make-a-right argument. Greenies and the occasional snoot don't result in the same sort of inflated stats such as Brady Anderson and Barry Bonds engaged in.

One guy broke the only rule posted in every clubhouse. The other guys engaged in behavior that was encouraged and celebrated by Major League Baseball. Now everyone wants to play holier-than-thou once public sentiment changed.

From that era? No. Even the “honest” ones were likely using something. That’s the other hypocrisy of this stance. They’re basically just honoring the guys who were better at cheating and/or keeping their mouths shut.
