so in the story.. he got suspended from the team but remained on scholarship and had the chance of making it back. Same day that it was announced that he was suspended, he raped a student that same night (Betsy). Later Karen, another victim, said the following;
When he called Karen after Todd Hodne had been arrested for the attack on Betsy Sailor, Karen hoped he was doing the right thing for her, especially after he asked, "Are you OK?"
But the call went differently than she expected. To Karen, Paterno's call "was kind of an admission that his football player did it, and he was expecting me to move forward."
At this point, yes he was suspended, but he was still on scholarship, still on campus. and was a roomate of a teammate who wasn't suspended.
Joe knew he raped this girl, yet he wanted to cover it up and move on..
in his sick twisted, winning at all costs but more importantly keeping his fake image, he certainly fits with the #BoysWillBeBoys camp.
JFC, don't they teach reading and reading comprehension in Texas? Almost everything you wrote is wrong.
- He didn't rape Betsy the same day it was announced he was suspended. First, he was suspended months earlier in July 1978. He did mention it to reporters after a scrimmage on Aug 19, 1978, a couple months after the suspension. The day before the scrimmage, Hodne raped a Karen Doe, not Betsy who was raped on September 13, 1978. The police did not tie the Karen Doe rape to Hodne until much later.
- The call you reference happened the day or so after Hodne was arraigned for rape, and while the exact date isn't mentioned it is inferred in the article that he had been kicked off the team and out of his dorm by then.
Basically everything you wrote was wrong, with the timeline wildly off. You had a narrative - I hate Joe Pa - so you just (1) made shit up, or (2) you are just dumb and can't read or comprehend what you read.
If Joe Pa had known he was arrested for rape and not kicked him off the team and off campus, I'd be with you. But the difference between you and me is that I can read and I understand what I read. You will whine this is too long, but I wanted to make sure of the facts - if you were correct, then I would have been to easy on Joe Pa - fuck him if the did that. But, as I suspected, he didn't do that and you can't read.
Timeline:
1977 season - freshman year, Hodne plays some
1978, June 18 - Hodne breaks into store
1978, June 21 - arrested for felony breaking and entering
1978, July - Hodne suspended for his Sophomore year
1978, Aug 18 - Hodne rapes Karen Doe - there is no evidence that Paterno knew this, and obviously he wouldn't have known this. In fact, this wasn't even attributed to Hodne until after the next two rapes months later.
On Aug. 19, 1978, two months after the burglary, Penn State held a scrimmage, and afterward, Paterno told gathered reporters that Todd Hodne had been suspended for the season. But he did not like to give up on his players, and he did not give up on Hodne. In his announcement, Paterno said that Hodne will be able to return to the team "if he has a good academic year and if he proves to us that [the robbery] was a mistake." He also sought to provide Hodne a role model for his sophomore season, and to that end, one of his seniors, Fred Ragucci, was summoned into the football office. Ragucci went to a Catholic high school on Staten Island, and now he played defensive end for Paterno. When Ragucci was told he would have a new roommate in Hamilton Hall, he didn't blink, even though he was two years older than Hodne and was not part of his crowd. Ragucci could figure out easily enough why he wound up in this unlikely pairing: "I was a pretty good student. I was pretty straight, never in any trouble. Nobody specifically mentioned this to me, but I think they were trying to put people in with people who might be a good influence."
1978, Sept 13 - Hodne rapes Betsy Sailor
1978, sometime in Sept/Oct - Hoden rapes Adrienne Reissman
1978, Fri Oct 13 - FBI connect Hoden to the two rapes via fingerprints; Officers contact Paterno to determine Hodne's location. He says would attempt to determine location, asked for them to get back on Sunday, October 15 at 6:30pm.
1978, Mon Oct 16 - Hodne turns himself in at 6:45am - investigation commences.
1978, Thurs Oct 19 - investigators want to meet with Hodne's roommate who is reluctant to do so - Paterno says
"You have to do this. You have to talk to them."
1978, Oct 25 - Hodne is arraigned for the rape of Sailor.
While the date is not specifically stated in the article, there are inference is that he was kicked off the team and moved out of the dorm soon after his arraignment.
1978, soon after Oct 25 - Paterno calls one of the rape victims:
"I seem to recall that somebody told me that he was concerned about it and that he might reach out to me," she says.
Paterno, in those days, was famous for doing the right thing. When he called Karen after Todd Hodne had been arrested for the attack on Betsy Sailor, Karen hoped he was doing the right thing for her, especially after he asked, "Are you OK?"
But the call went differently than she expected. To Karen, Paterno's call "was kind of an admission that his football player did it, and he was expecting me to move forward." Karen wanted to move forward but didn't want to forget. She was, in fact, hoping to prosecute. "He was trying to ascertain if I was going to go to [the Betsy Sailor hearing] and if the police had discovered anything concrete. My recollection is that he came out and asked me if I was going to testify—if I was planning to go to court." When Paterno called, she had hoped that he was calling out of concern for her. Instead, Karen felt he was calling out of concern for his program. "He was kind of scaring me I think a little bit," she says."
If you want to be critical of Joe Pa, and I really don't care one way or the other, here is where it starts. Perhaps he didn't handle that call well, but it happened after he was arrested, not before. It happened after Hodne was kicked off the team and out of the dorms. And the article is clear that Karen was very, very confused about Joe Paterno's calls, and everything that happened at the time - this was all only told decades later. PSU players actually went to the hearing to support Hodne, but testimony they heard make them change their minds as to his innocence. As I stated in my original post on this, Joe Pa also talked to some of the players who were going to testify at the actual trial in 1978, and he probably shouldn't have. But he didn't ask them to cover anything up, but to tell the truth. This was not a great look for Joe Pa, but it's not terrible either.
