And the apologists swear rap music, social media, poor parenting, movies, etc. don't condition people. No one is born like that; it takes a lot to turn someone into a POS. And the problem is endemic across all races and social classes. The people who deny the causation of this kind of tragedy are the same ones who castigate anyone who points it out. F'em. I just wish we could turn the clock back a bit and give McGowan and Bridges some better direction. Then they could still be good athletes but also have the makings for being a good neighbor, a good father and a good husband. I'm guessing Ron Meyer was the coach. Same one that was the coach at SMU when all the shit happened. And shit ass Craig James played for him both places IIRC.
On 2nd thought, that might have been later than '78 but it is still my best guess.
Only other coach I remember there was a Saban back in the AFL days when they were still the Boston Patriots. Don't remember his first name but I never heard any connection to Nick mentioned after Nick hit the scene.

Yes, it was Chuck Fairbanks, former head coach at Oklahoma. Fairbanks had a guy named Barry Switzer as his OC who took over as OU's head coach after Fairbanks left OU at the end of the 1972 season. Chuck's last two OU teams went 11-1 and he should have had at least one NC. It was cool that he brought the Patriots into Norman for a preseason game after he became the head coach at New England. Fairbanks was a tough SOB. One day at practice he forced the O and D to have a fist fight in the north end zone when the practice had been a total flop. Guys were cussing him for a week after that incident because they had cuts on their hands and faces after the fight. But they loved the way he let them cut loose and play wide open football during their games.
