Bill Russell was great

I always thought a good modern comparison would be Dennis Rodman, defense and rebounding no offense.

"Eleven is the smallest positive integer requiring three syllables in the English language, but more important than that, may I take this opportunity to remind you that 11 is the number of rings I have?" - Bill Russell talking to the girl working at Dunkin Donuts, who, like everyone else, doesn't give a shit
Show me on this doll where Bill Russell touched you...

I've often wondered how a no talent hack like Russell managed to win 2 NCAA championships, an Olympic Gold Medal and 11 NBA titles.
He played against tiny little white guys with glasses.

You’re welcome.

He played for a virulent racist who controlled the NBA and had all the top talent on his team. Bill Russell won 11 titles during the Depression against teams like the Wilkes-Barre Lions.

"greatest athlete ever" :pound:

His first career loss came against my Pistons. My Zollner Pistons.

Except Dennis excelled at that. He was the best in the league at it. Bill Russell never was. Wilt dominated this guy his whole career.

Bill Russell was just there. Solid, dependable 6' 10" guy when the average height in the NBA was 6' 2", the average color was white and the average name was Ralph.

I miss Ralph. The average name now has so many symbols in it it looks like an expletive in a black and white comic strip from back when Hoover was fucking things up and Bill Russell was stepping over Ralphs.

Now I got the Bunkers singing Those Were The Days stuck in my head.

Thanks for that.

If it wasn't for that 6'7" guy Farmer he would be towering over his midget teammates. There were like 40 colleges when he played college basketball as well and the Sweet Sixteen was the 1st round. Like I said, put him in the 70's, 80's, 90's or today's game--his accomplishments were great but that doesn't make him individually a great player.

Here's are some front court players Russell played against. All are in the HOF.

Wilt: 7-1

Nate Thurmond: 6-11

Walt Bellamy: 6-11

Elvin Hayes: 6-9 (although his first year in the league was Russell's last)

Jerry Lucas: 6-8

Connie Hawkins: 6-8

Dolph Schayes: 6-8

Bob Pettit: 6-9

Clyde Lovellette: 6-9

Russell is without a doubt the greatest winner the league has ever seen and the most important player on the greatest dynasty of all time. It's said he averaged more than 5 blocks per game. He would be a damn good rebounder and defender in today's game. No matter what era defense is always important.

He said Bill Russell was better than Hakeem Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Now he's been my friend for 45 years but I told him that's just stupid and you should probably never say that to anyone else as you may get punched in the fucking face!
