Why do they still exist?

They should go. As I have said countless times, rankings should not be a thing before like weeks 8-10.

Before that only seems to help teams get higher rankings by beating teams that never should have been ranked anyway.

my favorite is when ppl prop up teams that were formerly ranked, but then turned out to be dog shit as a quality win for their favorite team
But Clemson and Florida are solid teams and if they didn’t lose all those games they would still be highly ranked

They do determine the final rankings. CFP poll determines postseason matchups.

Yeah, how does that Week 1 Iowa win over #17 Indiana (Now 2-8) look now? Iowa and Cincinnati (Week 3) both got a lot of mileage out of it.

Iowa moved from pre-season #18 up to #10 the following Sunday off that convincing #17 Indiana win.
Iowa then went up to #5 the following week after beating #9 Iowa St. (Now 6-4)

Disclaimer: I was an Iowa believer back then and I haven't seen any Iowa folks referencing those wins since early in the season.

tbh, i think most of the posters on this board have a good understanding on how dumb early season polls are

euro hoop, on the other hand, is filled with retards

They only AP/Coach's Poll that matters is the one at the end of the season.

However, it is entertaining to see the poll throughout the year and honestly, even if we did our own polls, they would all mess up because polls don't take into account life itself. We want to view teams as basically a collection of robots instead of human beings. Sometimes teams lose games they shouldn't lose because said QB's girlfriend broke up with him weak before, etc. (I know that one was a little silly but you get my point).

I have no issue with the poll system as it exists.

I was thinking about that the other day. It seems rather pointless now, more pointless than they've ever been. Especially because they're regularly pretty different from the playoff rankings. I guess the only difference is that they start ranking teams earlier and continue through the last bowl games. But still, they're mostly useless now.

Why do the final polls matter?

People use it for final all-time program rankings. No one cares about your week1 (or even week 15) rankings but the Final Poll gets credited in all-time comparisons.

Cool of you to pick up on this decades late.
The rankings are there so that sec teams get higher rankings, then they can say they beat each other up, whether they win or lose, they stay high ranked, get better tv contracts, more recruits want to go there, get bigger bowls, etc,… sec and ESPN make more money.

So, doesn’t matter

So, doesn’t matter

When you cite that Texas is a blue blood and a top 10 all-time program, AP poll rankings are a big part of that bragging right.

Also prior to BCS, final AP Poll is often the best indicator of the rightful National Champion so, yeah, it does kind of matter. (The Playoff Committee also follows the polls).
