Clearly, UNC and NC State to the SEC next ...

If the B1G and SEC both increase to 18 members with your given scenario in the first paragraph, then I could see the Big XII also increasing to 18 members by not only adding the three schools you mentioned in paragraph two (Florida State, Clemson, Miami), but also adding Pitt, Louisville, and Notre Dame.... yup, the Irish might finally realize that joining a conference is necessary.

If the above would happen, then Syracuse, Boston College, and Wake Forest would be the big losers stuck on the outside. Those three schools would either need to go independent or to the American Conference.

I don't see ND joining a conference. And if they change course, I doubt it's going to be the Big 12 as a reactionary move. I agree on the Big 12 adding Louisville and Pitt though. Good rivals for WV.

With how embarrassing this weekend was for the SEC in basketball, it looms like Greg Sankey needs to go and add some good basketball schools.

That seems like a real possibility when the ACCs contract is up. I'd expect NC State and Virginia Tech to go to the SEC while UNC, Duke, Virginia and Georgia Tech go to the Big Ten.

ACC will have to fight like hell in order to prevent Florida State, Clemson and Miami from joining the Big 12 at that point. If that happens, the ACC is in big trouble. I like the ACC and hope they're able to turn things around and prevent this from happening. It would be sad to see Tobacco Road in different conferences.

Clemson and FSU will go to SEC.

lol, so it was his fault that TN, KY, Auburn all shit the bed? C'mon man

Yeah.. if the SEC expands further, and with them being tied at the hip with ESPN, I tend to think that they would get first dibs on which schools come from the ACC. Clemson, FSU, VT, NC would probably be the top choices. Where the BiG would probably do it's best to grab Duke, Miami.. GaTech?

If they get invited. Depends on whether SEC goes for the brands or tries to expand their footprint
Yeah, actually thinking about it.. FSU is probably the no brainer.. Clemson on the other hand? Is it worth more than NC?

I think the SEC is changing mentality. It is also not about brands as well that is attractive with Clemson and FSU, I think it is about keeping/securing the end of year rivalry games: FSU-Florida and USCe-Clemson.

The ACC will be fine until 2031 however.

Next few years are crucial for Clemson football. If Clemson makes 9-3 a regular thing, they are much less valuable to the SEC

You left out Alabama and LSU too (although I give LSU a pass because they didn't have a coach).

They necessarily don't have to join a conference to put it's other sports in the Big12 if they wanted to. But I'm sure they would want to the Big12 to expand and bring in schools in the East like BC/Syracuse.. But I doubt it happens, they really hate and want nothing to do with WVU

still man, as a commish he did his job. They got a lot of schools in and now have the BEST EVER squad not to make it, winning the NIT lol

That is a bold statement. There have been other epic NCAA screw jobs in the past. Digging through history, you can probably find a worse example than even Texas A&M.

Good point, I wasn’t thinking about NDs other sports. But if the ACC falls flat, they may feel more comfortable in the Big East

In theory, I think the SEC wants the ACC intact but the ACC signing up for the Alliance has the league worried about losing the end of year games. I don't understand ACC's affiliation with the Alliance unless they are afraid the B1G will poach their teams. From what I gather knowing a few people with the SEC office, there really wasn't an interest in taking Big12 teams back in the day until they started approaching the SEC. The 12-team situation was working out fine but I think the thought was you have to expand to save the sport. It was kind of hard to say no to Texas A&M in wave 1 and OU/Texas in wave 2.

A North Carolina team and Virginia Tech makes a lot of sense for expansion for the SEC. (I am not 100% sure UNC goes to the B1G, remember Texas wanted to go to B1G as well due to academics but ultimately realized SEC was a better fit. I can see similar situation for UNC. I think SEC wants UNC ahead of the other schools in that state). Keep in mind that brand is now a major factor and in-state schools are not married at the hip anymore as you see with Oklahoma-Oklahoma State situation.

Virginia Tech would be a great cultural fit for some of the SEC East programs, especially Tennessee. That is a fun matchup for us and that would become a quick rivalry. However, their football hasn't been very strong since Beamer left.

Clemson and FSU have been exploring options for awhile now. I think both want to join the SEC first but would be willing to go to any conference that can commit to football. The initial though was Big12 but now that conference is probably NOT attractive to them (at least not more than staying in the ACC). Miami is in an interesting situation. No one really wants them despite being a program with 5 National Titles. Issue with Miami is lack of fan support/attendance. I am wondering if the B1G or SEC would even take Miami if the ACC implodes.

If I had to rank on the likelihood of ACC schools ending up in SEC, I would say the following:

1. FSU
2. Clemson
3. UNC
4. Virginia Tech
5. NC State
6. Maybe Miami? After 5, it is hard to envision anyone else having a chance. I guess Georgia Tech would be in the running too but there is a lot of bad blood with how they previously left the SEC.

no.. UT didn't want the BiG like that.. maybe back in the 90s when they were looking around, but for academics, it was always the PAC first. I got confused earlier with UVA and MD. I think the SEC would rather bring in UVA than VT.. but I agree that UVA probably would rather go to the BiG and reunite with MD.

UVA doesn't have a solid brand but you could be correct. SEC actually wants the higher ranked academic institutes as well.

I am confident the SEC wants UNC first and I am not so sure UNC wants to go to the B1G over the SEC. NC state would be a decent compromise so they would be in the running but only if SEC needs a spot to fill. I do think UNC is probably the top target for the SEC but Clemson and FSU are more likely because I think they want to leave the ACC.

As stated, I think the SEC would probably want to keep ACC intact if feasible under the condition they keep most of their OOC matchups. If the OOC matchups start to go away, the league could poach teams.

Then again, I was wrong about the COVID-19 year. When the ACC offered to do an OOC game, I thought it was setup to renew the in-state rivalry matchups with the SEC but the SEC came out with a new OOC game policy a week after the ACC announcement which shocked me.

You got it. The ACC entered the alliance because they are very concerned the Big Ten might go after some of their programs. They probably think the Alliance makes that less probable. I don’t think that’s gonna turn out to be true but we will have to see

Miami is not AAU ... can't go into the B1G. I think the B1G would go east and west. To the East grab UNC and Duke, both AAU schools. To the west UCLA and USC are both AAU. If they wanted to avoid the time zone issues, then UNC, UVa, Duke, and maybe Pittsburgh, all AAU schools.

All of this depends on why they are doing it. Just because a team wants to leave the ACC doesn't mean that all the teams in the SEC and B1G would be willing to take smaller piece of the pie to make that happen.
